Does anyone culture common house flys for gecko or chameleon food? Or know of any good sites for info and to buy them?

I've cultured fruit flies. I'm looking for the common house fly, or maybe even horse flies. Bigger, meatier, and its amazing watching geckos chase them around.

well there are a few reason why cultureing these just isn't done. although they are good food they are very messy and if they escape they will annoy you far more than fruit flies.
i have done it and will tell you it isn't that great of an idea. the first time you have several escape will be when you decide to kill the project. not to mention how nasty a tub of maggots looks, even if using proper food.

Jabber, I've never heard of people using them in the country but I know the Germans seem to like them. Figured it would give a new type of food and give them a challenge . . .make them work for it you know.

Depends what you are feeding and what you are feeding it to. Crickets are higher in protein and lower in fat but maggots/pupae/flies have significantly better Ca
ratios. If fed in large amounts, some maggots will pass through undigested (but this happens with crickets too). My preference is using flies for hatchling geckos, maggots for small dragons and maggots/pupae for small skinks.

I just like watching geckos do tricks trying to catch the flys. Makes them work for their food. I'd still use crickets but mix it up a little.

There is a guy in Oregon that breeds common house flies. I believe his website is like Oregon Feeder Insects?? I have used him before. I think that if you set up the fly cages like Danny's and could come up with the right feed, temps and humidity you could use his fly pupae to start your own colonies. I would not believe that it would be that hard.

You many also want to check some of the insects classifides. I have a friend of mine who keeps large cultures of house and green bottle flies as food for his mantids. He produces large numbers of them and has everything down with them. Only problem I see is that they are not the flightless type, which would be easier to deal with!
