The funny thing about eggs.. and first timers...

is you just cant help but want to check on them daily... hourly even if you can... for years upon years the maker of this great world has made it possible for animals of all kinds to reproduce without my help.. yet for some reason I find myself lifting the lid on that lil hide EVERY CHANCE I get... it's been 9 days... feels like 90 and that I should have a 30 day old gecko or two running around...

Attached are pics of all my females in that cage in the SAME HIDE with the EGGS.. there are THREE IDENTICAL hides in that cage.... they are all in the same temperature - and they know I open that hide atleast 2 times a day.... but you see where they are... with the eggs.. yet the mother, will not even go into a hide.. she lays on the warm rocks or the cool rocks.. never in the hide... and she stays FAR away from Baby Mac (her baby daddy)

just an update - hope you guys enjoy

Oh yeah, and before you tell me to take the eggs out - I'm not going to... Im going to leave them in there - it's the warmest, most moist area in the whole house and I dont have the incubator here yet (yes it was ordered)
I have made their habitat as close to that of which mother nature would have offered them and well to the best of my knowledge there are not a million lil hovobators plugged in for all the wild geckos to lay their eggs in - if they can do it in the wild they can do it in my lil colony....TRUST ME when they hatch.. I'll be there to assure they dont become breakfast/lunch/dinner for the older ones....

What do you guys think of the other females guarding her eggs? Wonder why they do that....(what you cant see is the one female that is actually laying ontop of the eggs but hidden beneath 2 of the others on the far right)... oh yeah and btw. YES that is Baby Mac on the far right... looking all cute and "Daddy" like!

Well, I guess you just have a big gecko sisterhood thing going on there. If you mess with her eggs, you mess with the whole family!

As for taking something out, I'd be more concerned about taking out that daddy than the eggs atm! That is, unless you want more eggies...but since you've ordered an incubator, I suppose you'll be ready for any more drama that may ensue, eh?

Good luck with them! :D

I am guessing that they all went towards the eggs in search of a meal, as I believe that leos eating leo eggs has been reported before.

very very bad idea. leos will eat their own young, even the mothers. not only that, but the eggs will end up trampled if you don't get them out ASAFP! the females walking around in there can roll or crush the little eggs. I'd recommend putting them in a sealed deli cup that stays about 82 degrees with just a few small air holes. at least until the incubator arrives.

I agree with Kevin. It's ok to utilize the heat/humidity of the enclosure. But they WILL trample the eggs sooner or later. The eggs are not what I would consider "tough". So, at least put the eggs in a container that the leos can't mess with (ie deli cup or gladware w/ a lid).

Get the eggs out of the enclosure if you havent already. it also looks as though youve got some rotten eggs in with the good ones get those out of there.

Best of luck

No rotton eggs - those are pebbles that they pulled from the "play area" - I have my tanks set up for a feeding area, which is all tile, and a play area which is rocky, sandy and dirty clay, and two nice hides one on the mat, one off the mat on the cool end.. when I put in mealies and/or crickets I put a divider up over the sand area where they cant get to that area to eat....no impaction issues... but Ms Loki (momma) would kick the pebbles into the hide when she was getting ready to lay or soon after....I left them there - she decided she wanted them there so I figured she had her reasons *LOL*

The eggs are still in the hide - my incubator will be here tomorrow - they'll go in there tomorrow.

Oh it is, Vendetta - the baby of the whole bunch - will not leave the hide, she lays on those eggs like a mother hen.. I can take her out and spray the hide and she comes back in while I'm spraying. I stop move her back out again, spray... she runs right back in.. she's a MESS!!!!

Baby Mac - the daddy - he's become quite fond of the huddle too - but I think he has quite the different idea in mind... perhaps "brooding mother hens"...."all these girlies are jealous of loki's babies.. maybe I should give them some eggies of their own"... *LOL* He is the "Mack Daddy" - 1 boy 6 girls!

Oakley - not sure what her deal is, she's growing super fast these days, I am not positive she's not a giant.... but she will bite your finger if you try to take her out of the hide...I dont care, it does not hurt but DANG she's the vicious one!

Habiba - just likes the warm huddle of bodies I think...she's not very social and she rarely puts up a fuss to take her from the hide.. but she does go right back the moment it's sprayed and the lid is back on....

Gypsy - she's new and just glad to have gecko friends... she goes with the crowd.. but she does get all huffy - she's a follower - if the others lay still she lays still if the put on the defence posture she's up on all fours eyeing me...

Pixxi - she's a lil mother hen, if I take her out she kisses me then looks at the box.. "okay mommers, I kissed you, now put me back so I can guard loki's babies.. it's my turn mommy let me go please".....

Yeah it's definately a "mob" of girlie geckos! They seem to be watching out for each other.. Im pulling all my males this weekend - I wanted to last weekend but there just was no place to put them, I built a small rack and bought some shoebox bins I'm going to pull my males.. I hate to, they all love their lil homes.. but I'm just not quite prepared for babies...

I have heard they will - that's why I'm checking every day - the incubators arrive tomorrow after that I'll have no worries about it... they'll be in a nice safe place...but if I didnt get an incubator I would have put them in 10 gallon tanks with a heat pad the week before I thought they were to hatch....and just prayed for the best....

ok ok ok... all you dang breeders *LOL* (just teasing)
I'll do something with them tonight.

They are stuck to the bottom of that hide... they cant get turned over I have vermiculite packed tight around them since I couldnt get under them... the one on the right when a light is shown through it has a big red circle with red veins coming from it... the one on the left - nothing...They can get smashed in there with all the females laying on top but I do have them tightly packed with verm.... so dont worry about them turning... but I will take care of the crushing issue tonight... anything to get them out and look at them..

btw the room temp NEVER EVER falls below 85....the room humidity never falls below 56... the tank humidity in that area is running high 80's. We have the room set up to accomidate several different reptiles - most of which require pretty high humidity - an industrial sized humidifier runs 24/7!
