I got a couple messages from people curious about feeding roaches, after a comment I made on someone's thread. For those of you that do not know about Dubia Roaches, now you will! They are absolutely AWESOME feeders. I raised most of my geckos on mealworms, superworms, and crickets (I CANNOT stand crickets...noise, smell, escapees, etc).
A lot of owners and breeders have enough geckos that they breed their own feeders, making it MUCH less expensive. Of course, one gecko doesn't warrant starting a whole COLONY of feeders!
About a month and a half ago I got a starter kit of Dubia roaches, and I am totally sold. My geckos are MUCH healthier, even after a couple weeks on them.
PLUS SIDE OF DUBIAS:
*No smell
*Low mortality rate
*No sound (other than scurrying in the tub)
*No escapees (unlike crickets!)
*Reproduce very quickly, with live young
*VERY easy to breed
*Very easy to differentiate between sexes
*Geckos go NUTS over them (at least mine do!)
*They are not as gross as they sound. Nymphs resemble potato (pill) bugs
Here are some pictures of them. Even after a month my colony is big enough to feed from! I also attached a couple pictures of my little Albino Patty after a week and a half on roaches, versus crickets before.
