Need advice on pregnant and malnourished gecko- UPDATE!!!!

Ok, on Friday I rescued a female and male leopard gecko. The person who had them previously was keeping both together. The male is in good health but the female is severly malnourished and has suffered a serious case of MBD.Well I took a look at her today and realized she is pregnant, the eggs are approx. 1/2 inch long. She is fully grown and weighs a measly 31 grams. Her tail is thin and her arms are severely bent from the MBD. My question is how can I help her gain some weight before she lays the eggs. She's been eating superworms maybe 2 a day and 2 waxworms a day plus I have her on Repta-Aid. She's not a big eater and I'm really worried about her. I am also worried the eggs are going to drain her and cause her MBD to flare up again. Her food is dusted with vitamin and calcium supplements daily. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!:(

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She is doing great now, as I posted earlier she was not pregnant but has an intestinal infection and a stone in her colon. She's been on meds since Tuesday for the infection, parasites and a med to help her keep her food down. Her CBC did show a higher number of white blood cells so we are continuing with the antibiotics. When she was weighed on Tuesday she was only 31 grams, she now weighs 45 GRAMS:yahoo:!!! Thats 14 grams in 4 days!!!! She's gotten her fight back and fights me tooth and nail to take her meds lol! She is still being force fed as my vet recomended that until the middle of next week or until she starts eating on her own. Just thought I would let everyone know how she is holding up!Thanks!

I don't know if there's much more you can do besides watching her carefully for signs of egg binding which would be a concern and taking her to a vet for more ideas and possibly some more intense calcium loading.

and possibly some more intense calcium loading.

That would be my suggestion as well. Right now the eggs are draining her of calcium so you need to make sure she gets plenty of calcium. You seem to be doing ok since she's eating a few food items a day... at least she's eating and hasn't completely stopped... Some is a good thing.

Did she reach full growth yet then lost the weight or was she small to begin with when she got gravid?

She was a "bad breeder" rescue so she has been skinny for sometime. The MBD was most likely casued from not supplementimg and then breeding plus she was being kept in a 18x18x18 tank with 8 other females plus the male. All the females looked pretty bad but she was by far the worst. Thanks guys!

Yeah I call it my zoo. And all but 1 of them are adopted and all but 3 are special needs. They can be quite a handful but I love em!

Take the gecko to a vet for aspiration and oxytocin injections. Allowing a gecko with a potentially fatal condition to continue to produce viable eggs is IMO animal cruelty.

In other words, have a vet get those eggs out now, and be prepared to revisit the vet every month or so until any and all viable sperm is used up. Animal rescue is not cheap, and not to be taken lightly. That's why most of us shouldn't attempt it.

Yeah she has a vet appointment at 3:20 tomorrow.I was gonna ask if they could aspirate the eggs but I wasn't sure if they could do it.I know snakes can have it done but now that I know it's ok for geckos too I'm definetley having them done. She's also developed watery stool so she's having a fecal done to check for parasites. Money and time aren't issues I just wanted an opinion on it first, thanks!

Ok I managed to take her in earlier than our original appointment and I have some good news and bad. The good is she isn't pregnant!!:biggrin:The bad is she may have an infection in her intestine thats causing her to lose wight and have loose stools. She also has a urate stone( which looked liked an egg) in her colon that shes having a hard time passing due to the infection. She is now on an antibiotic, worming meds just in case (they only found 1 egg so just a precaution) and a med that will help her keep her food down since she started vomiting late last night. They also did a CBC and she has to go back in on friday to have some more blood drawn to check for organ failure. They tried to do that today but she sucked up and they were only able to get enough blood to do a CBC. Thanks to everyone who helped me out on here and I'll keep you updated on how shes doing!

I have thanks. She's able to hold down her food now and is finally drinking water again, she's on baby food now since she couldn't stomach the repta aid. The stone is still visible but she is much perkier than she was a few days ago and she's still defecating,it still looks runny but not as watery. Thanks and hopefully she'll start putting on some weight!
