Hi, guys, Tuesday night was my last World Religion class and we were briefly going over some of the smaller religions, one of which included Zoroastrianism. Our handout mentioned the name Angra Mainyu. It described him as the satanic head of evil forces and a wicked spirit that opposed the founder Zarathustra. I just thought this was really interesting and may possibly be the origin of the name of this species as this religion in mainly found in India and it's founder was born in 650 BC. There may be some interesting stories as to how it got this name, something like Uroplatus being evil and feared by natives .

Good find Jacob, brings it all together, and like you said, must have something to do with the natives fearing of it.

Actually, my "Eyelid Geckos" book says that they were named after the ghost Angramanyu, which alluded to its secretive nature, nothing about tormenting natives...

In ancient Persian mythos, the twins Spentamanyu and Angramanyu were the divine embodiment of the duality of good and evil. Can't have one without the other, therefore there is only one divine being - even if it's composed of two twins.

It always makes it more interesting when theres a story behind a name, rather than the species just being named after the person that discovered it. I just had my Eyelid Geckos book out last night looking through the Goniurosaurus section in anticipation of my new arrivals:yahoo: I'm gonna have to read that part now too. I wonder what extents the natives would go to concerning this species. I think I remember reading that if a Uroplatus was found on a hut that it was either burned down or the residents moved.

Zoroastrianism must have gotten that particular belief from the ancient Persian myths.
