Is it normal for them to be active in the daylight

It's fine. It doesn't matter. Some are active during day, some are active at night. You can train them to be more active during the day by handling them and feeding them during the day.
I don't think it would matter when they're active. But to answer your question: Most leopard geckos are active at night, like they are in the wild.

So, I've been a gecko owner for less than a month, but I actually have some experience with this...

Lola is pretty active during the day - I'm not sure about at night because I'm not in my classroom at night. But during the day, she walks around a lot - which the kids love - and sleeps out of her hide (another treat for them).
Tony sleeps a lot during the day, but during quiet times of our day (independent reading, writing...) he comes out and chills where they can see him and he can watch them. I swear he thinks they're weird and a little creepy while Lola seems just as interested in them as they are in her. It's cute. The longer they stare at him, the sooner he goes back under his log. The longer they stare at her, the longer she stares at them.

But they are more active at night. Occasionally they will come out to bask on the 93 degrees basking spot, or just switch hides. I feed them right before I will turn on the night light. I handle them during the day whenever I handle them. I handle them for about 10-15 minutes. I hold them every other day.

GiGi never switches hides. I guess she prefers her strawberry hide. Lol. She'll push it to her warm side (it's fairly light rubber, maybe 6-10grams) just to keep warm in it. It SHOULD be on her cool side. But whenever I put it over there, I wake up and it's halfway on it's way to the warm side. Same with all her rocks. The small ones at least. Lol. She can't carry the big ones. They're like 80grams.
