Overeating??

I HATE hamsters. lol. No, i don't hate them, but I don't really like them. SO far as furries go, I'm a rat person myself.
I love the biology of insects. Besides the feeders we raise, which have a very good life btw, albeit a short one lol, we also keep/have kept caterpillars (Monarchs, Spicebush Swallowtails, Painted Ladies, and Black Swallowtails), praying mantids (I really want an Orchid Mantid!), Harvestet Ants (Ant Farm), and the odd scorpion/spider. Raising feeders just seemed like a natural thing to do. And it's incredibly convenient.
We do the caterpillar thing every year and my son keeps the earthworms he finds in our yard as pets. I actually do grow tomatos, carrots and herbs, tried pumpkins, no luck. We have wild praying mantis that just love to hang out in my garden. and btw I hate hamsters too! LOL! But they are the only "furry" that I am not allergic to :(

Well in Jersey you cannot own a matnis, they are the state insect and are protected. :[ 500 dollar fine for kililng one, 1000 for owning. Jeeze. But i dont think earthworms are good for geckos. Too big and mushy. NEVER FEED WILD CAUGHT FOOD. it has parasties/disease. IT COULD KILL YOUR GECKO!

Haha yeah. I have a big backyard. 1 acre. But i don't know what i'd grow back there and leopards dont need grass space, as well as i'd probably lose him. Its open ground with grass, very nice since im in upper middle class.
I think you mean your PARENTS have a big backyard.

Mean :[. Haha but yes they do. I'm the only one who uses it tho. My mom uses the patio for planting, I use my backyard to play with my dog. But really read my post, i edited it. It's important to read the part about wild caught.

Veronzi it is true I do not own a gecko, but I have compiled about 3 months worth of research into getting one. I like to research a pet before i get them. Over the course of 3 months, not 3 months worth of. I know alot since i ask alot of questions. Plus while i waited for my questiosn to be answered i scowered this entire forum. Leopard gecko almost entirely, pests and diseases, food and nutritioun, ect. I know alot since I study and do my homework.

I misread the part about keeping as pet, I just want you to make sure your gecko does not die or get sick. You'll receive some similar advice from people who own geckos on this site compared to me since i read about 30 care sheets, have read up on the history of them, their diet, habitat, and ect.

We all can read... experience, in my opinion, is the best teacher. Have a Good night.

Veronizi, if I'm starting to get "the look" (as I'm getting right now, hahahaha), I'll go over and drop a mealworm in front of the house. I usually put it about three or four inches out of the house to coax him out. If he takes that, I start dusting and cripling crickets. SoCo has Horrible aim...my hubby is actually coaching him to get on the cricket thats in there right now...so I usually yank a back leg or two off to slow the crickets down just a bit. They still move, they just cant jump, which helps.

another one of these questions. I think you CAN overfeed your gecko. Others may strongly disagree but I say yes you can.

haha, funny I got the look today... dropped them in about two at a time until he went back to his house. I was getting out a couple that were left over and he came back out and started eating again. I think he ate about 20 small crickets today in 10 minutes, not including a hefty mealworm snack in the am. Bubblegum goes totally off movement, I thought of taking a hind leg off but today I accidentally did it and he just kindof ignored that cricket. I had a snake like that once, I would kinda knock out the mice I fed him, but if it wasn't moving around enough he wouldn't go for it at all.
Anyway, so far if we just tap on his cage where the crickets are he goes right for them.

haha, ya SoCo is the same way. He stunned a cricket when he lunged for it the other day. He sat and stared at it, as it lay litterally under his chin. He would look at it, look at me, look at it again, back and forth till I finally reached in and flipped it back over and it hopped away and he nailed it. I've also noticed to that he will eat like, 20 bugs one day, but the next day hell drop down to maybe 8 to 10. He's not constantly eating that many.
I'm still waiting for him to shed though. Has Bubblegum done that yet?? How long have you had him?

Funny you said that b/c today he doesnt have as much of an appetite, guess he filled up the last few days. We have only had him a week. We purchased him to replace another little guy that we adopted that was sick, wouldn't eat for no apparent reason other than possible stress. We tried with that guy for two weeks before turning him over to someone that had worked with sick reptiles before.
Gotta say its such a joy to watch these guys eat, especially after having one that needed to be dropper fed.
No Bubblegum hasn't shed yet... Can't wait & am looking forward to see how big he gets :0)

What do you think by overweight? A leopard gecko can go to 25 cms and 100 grams and that doesn't mean that the gecko is overweight.
It's normal to have that weight at 2 years or 1 year. My leo has 79 grams and only has 9 months and she is normal. The fat doesn't weight much.

Not all geckos topping 100g are giants, they may just be big. As with all life forms there is no cookie cutter layout for size.
