uroplatus species classification.

ok so im basically after more info on classification of individual species of uroplatus within the genus,

i know that it is hard to say for sure how many species/sub species/form/locales there are out there but does anyone want to have a go at it,

im thinking of putting a poster together, almost like a family tree with good photos of each species and their individual forms or sub species linked to the closest related relative,

for instance the top might read

uroplatus

fimbriatus group ebenaui group allaudi group

etc etc,
im not sure which if any of the obove groups u.pietschmanni should be in,

it would be interesting to know for instance about forms of individual species, like the large form phants or the long tailed ebanaui,or if u.giganteus is a seperate species or a form of fimbriatus,

ohh and if anyone has pics to put in all the better,
im particularly looking for pics from reliable sources of
U. malama
U. allaudi
U. malahelo

if you have anything to share or add to the idea dont be shy,

thanks guys

most of the photos of alluaudi, malahelo and malama are either in books or on olaf pronk's website.

it is debated if malama has even been described properly as it was described from one male holotype and in the publication, if I remember correctly, they didn't even find a female malama.

According to the book:

Fimbratus group:
fimbriatus
henkeli
giganteus
sikorae sikorae
sikorae sameiti
aff. sikorae
aff.henkeli
aff.fimbriatus

ebenaui group:
ebenaui
malama
phantasticus
aff.phantasticus
aff.ebenaui
aff.malama

alluaudi group:
alluaudi
guentheri
pietschmanni
malahelo

lineatus group:
lineatus

there have been numerous threads on the locales/subspecies/undescribed species before, and it really is very confusing, so it might be worth finding them and reading them through.

You beat me to it Graham,

Was just about to grab the book :)

I’d also add that classification would be hard as most of the sub species are unofficial and there are many people claiming they have the rarer ones like malama etc when in fact they just have a phantasticus or ebenaui.

:nana:

That's a good point, but some people don't know what gecko they have even when it is a well known species

If you have the last book of P. Schonecker (he read and write on this forum) you can see pics of all Uroplatus, malama, alluandi, malahelo and some affinis too.

There are many problems with the identification of the Uroplatus species when it comes to the hobby, especially. How often do you actually get ANY locality information when you get a wild-caught animal? Here in the states, practically no one can trace their animals back to a certain area. The importers simply don't carry that information.

Aside from that, there are problems with ID specifically within the ebenaui group. There is too much we can speculate about what exactly is going on with them. Work done by Greenbaum, Bauer and friends seems to suggest that the animals we recognize as certain species within the ebenaui group today may be different species from the individuals the species were described from.

Try doing a literature search, as that's better to go by than anything that hobbyists suggest.

start with this:
