Feeding Mealworms As A Staple

I want to switch Psycho ( My girl :) ) over to mealies as the staple, I know tat Ron Tremper uses mealworms as his staple, so heres how I would be gut loading them:

Bedding:
Weat Bran

Moisture:
Carrots
Romain Lettuce
Kale

Could I switch her to this? She will still be getting crickets around two times a week, and butterworms about 1 time a week.

So, yeah, are mealies suitible for her.

She does have fatty liver and very mild MBD.

Your plan sounds decent. I would also try her out on Phoenix worms, will help with the MBD.

he/she didnt say it was the best thing to do just if it was ok to change over to mealies. I would say it is fine as long as you gecko can digest the shells ok and try to feed them when the mealworms have jus shed there shell.

And phoenix worms would be good also since they are high in calcium and the butterworms are good too since they are also high in calcium. I tried butter worms and had to stop because my leo was throwing up the butter worms shell.

Whether it's "ok" or not, mealworms are JUNK!

Phoenix worms (soldier fly larva) are nice IF your animal will eat them. I've not been able to get any of my geckos of any species to eat them though. And I know of many others with similar experiences. So make sure to start by purchasing a small quantity to make sure your geckos will eat them.

I second, third and fourth that! The problems with mealworms lie with the exoskeleton - not what you pump into them. Occasional use - maybe. Use as a staple - NOT!

Butterworms cannot be good if your animals will not eat them or regurgitate them!

I have reached my final decision, varied diet hurrah!

40% Crickets
35% Mealworms
25% Other feeders

My leopard gecko will NOT touch pheonix worms or roaches, so Ive decided that a veried diet is best.

I always keep mealworms on hand, since they can refrigerated they make excellent emergency food. Like when my regular scheduled cricket shipment is lost or other mishaps occur.

Mealies make up a very small part of my reptile diets.
