Can anyone ID this morph?

One of my hatchlings from last year, born in July. Has MASSIVE crests, and great contrast....on his 'best' days he is a dark black with nearly neon yellow :shock: pattern, other times he's a very dark grey but the yellow stays just as bright.

I have never seen another crestie like him, I've seen similar ones, but they didn't have his extreme yellow. Pix taken this morning with natural light.

What is his morph and what do you think of him?

I used the same pairing this year in hopes to get a few more of whatever color variation he is. :biggrin:

His 'morph' is harlequin (although the pattern on his back may be considered a flame/ fire, one of the books I have describes the difference between flames and harlequins in a really weird and incomprehensible way- what I say is, flames have markings just between the crests while harlys have markings on the sides and legs as well)
However, given you post, I think what your really interested in is not so much his 'morph' but his color. And in cresties, color depends a lot on who you are talking to, especially for geckos in the red-orange-dark yellow phases (although browns are a little better). Harlys are usually classed on their base color (the darker one) so his color would be considered either dark chocolate or black. The neon yellow markings are very nice and I agree with you, I don't think I've seen anything like that either, but as I said before his 'morph' is relatively strait-forward.

I think it´s a dark flame. Harlequin have patron on the sides already. Your´s not.

To describe the morph, first color group (black, dark), second patron (flame)...

he DOES have a pattern on his sides (at least that's what I think what you mean when you say patron). check the last picture especially.

Hmmm so he's most likely a black harly I guess. Did not mention I have another almost exactly like him (and its a female! :idea but she is leaning toward the brownish end of the spectrum, whereas he is more gray. Can't wait to pair those two up!!

Most cresteds are actually quite normally colored, and yet most people in the US refer to every single version as a "morph". It seems that crested have not been worked with for that many years to really produce many actual "morphs", and most of what are called "morphs" are just what someone wants to see in it, not what is actually there. Like looking at clouds in the sky... If more people saw what wild ones looked like and the array they come in, many of the so-called "morphs" would then be recognized as just a natural coloration variant. "Morph" generally referrs to a bred-in trait, more commonly an expression of a recessive genetic trait(s).

That all being said, though, this photo does have some pretty unusual yellow in it. Maybe it could be called a "Normal- High Yellow" (to imply normal colors and patterns with an unusual dispplay of yellow pigmentation)..... ???

This is only our opinion. No more no less... Mine is a flame (harlequin). Today all people say "harleuin" in the same moment that see a little patron in the sides... This is an error... But I have no time to waste in this post... sorry.

Including using your color guide is a flame...

it is not a flame.

there is paterning on the sides that is not throughout the whole sides.
The patterning is coming up from the bottom and up the sides.


end of story.

Harlequin:
This morph shares the appearance of the flame morph with the addition of variable coloured patterning rising up the sides from the belly and down the legs to the feet while contrasting with the base colour.

I bought mine at a mont old and they are the size of your ones head alone!

Mine is too young to see a colour as they are often brown when young but Titan, my 1st one, is a harlequin and looks almost exactly like yours.

Luckily the shop keeper didnt know much about them and i got him for £10 as opposed to the £60 i was offered one for at a different shop. I am pleased with him and he seems to like jumping on my face for some reason...

Also, how long did it take for him to reach that size and is he still growing?

I would like mine to stay small but seeing that picture has made me see that he will grow big...

usually they reach full size a little over a year old but some continue to grow after that as well
