I have a heat lamp and a heat mat in my gecko tank, but the temps are still not where they need to be. is there another heat source i can use that will not cost a fortune?

Make sure you measure the temperature on the floor where the gecko is, not at the top where the air will be cooler.

Also, try using something to raise your heat mat a bit closer to the glass terrarium. I assume you have a glass Terrarium?

If you have a cage or screen Terr, then a meat mat may not be that useful as the heat can easily escape from all sides.

Also make sure your light bulb is to heat the Terr, and not just a simple UV Lightbulb, I dont know how experienced you are, so I'm just throwing ideas out there :p

You're also from Alberta, so I assume its getting a bit colder now gearing up for the summer? :)

EDIT: OH! Did you make sure you used the Adhesive side of the heat mat to stick the mat to the glass? Or is it laying freely? Make sure its directly sticking to it for the best trade off of heat :)

If you're really having trouble getting your temps up, I would suggest using a CHE (ceramic heat emitter) as opposed to your heat lamp. Unlike a heat lamp, a CHE can stay on 24 hours a day as it doesn't put off any light. And it can be purchased in a variety of sizes to suit your needs. As with all heating devices, make sure to put it on a thermostat or rheostat to avoid overheating or other issues. Here's some good examples: Reptile Heating Products, Thermostats & Thermometers

I agree with Riverside. Using a ceramic heat emitter is a great idea if you aren't getting the heat you need from the UTH. The heat emitters that I have used are from Zoo Med and their ranges are just like a light bulb. They have 60w, 100w, 150w....etc. I actually have a couple in stock on website now but shipping to Canada is a little expensive due to border tax. If you can't find any near you then let me know. Good Luck!
