The "dimmer" thermostats that Maurice is refering are actually called proportional thermostats, such as the Herpstat from Spyder Robotics. So if you see proportional thermostat then that is what he is talking about. If it doesn't really specify then the thermostat is a regular on/off thermostat usually.
 
I own a number of Habistat T-stats, once upon a time I lived in Europe. Mine are "Dimming Thermostats" and is why I refer to them as such.

The one Herpstat I own came much later and I use it to maintain the nile monitors enclosure temps. I spoke out of habit and did not consider they were refered to by different names in different countries, even though I know this.

I employ mostly Ranco ETC 111000-000 thermostats on the non light producing heat sources I use, in my opinion they are a great value and super easy to work with. I believe they may cost a bit more than some of the Herp related thermostats but I've grown to like and trust them.

No worries. I understand. I just figured that the person that was reading this might not understand what the dimmer thermostat was.

All rhetrostats are maunal dimmers, not thermostats.
