Can honestly say I don't know, bought a gecko in it... and it is easy for me too take pictures so I use it.

What is that substrate?

It should be a small animal substrate called "careFRESH". It is mainly made of cellulose fiber (at least according to the site). It holds odors better than the shavings and is a great nesting/burrowing substrate for hamsters,rabbits and other small furred animals. If you want more info you can always google carefresh ;D.

I've seen it maybe twice or once with vendors using to display or sell their animals with. I wouldn't recommend it for our 4 legged scaled critters but snakes can use it as a substitute to aspen shavings or newsprint though it is quite pricey... The texture feels like bunched up paper-towels? lol It comes in a variety of colors too!! :O

Yea, I've seen some vendors at shows using it for their snakes and geckos. It can create a cool effect since it comes in colors, so I've seen these great bright snakes on light blue carefresh and they just look that much brighter.
