Gold Dust Day Gecko Diet Question

Hi there one and all. I am new to this forum and new to geckos in general. I bought a gold dust day gecko (Striker) about 6 months ago and have been feeding it crickets (about 7 - 10 per week) dusted with calcium and vitamin suplements (with d3). I also leave a blended mixture of fresh mango, organic unsweetened apple sauce, honey, and also sprinkled with some calcium and vitamins.

My problem is, Striker has become one fat gecko. I leave the fruit in the cage because we almost never see any sign of him eating it. (Maybe four times in 6 months and almost never any lick marks). I took him back to the reptile store where we bought him for their opinion and they thought he was chunky and that the crickets were not the cause rather the fruit. Since I almost never see signs of him eating it I thought I would ask you all if you think 7 - 10 crickets is too much, too little, or just right. The store wants me to cut back on the fruit and increase the number of crickets.

Any advice on a "slimming down" feeding routine would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Eric

Oh my god, that's a real fatty! Your pet store is right, don't feed him sweets (fruit and so on) any more. The crickets are not the problem. Feed him every 3rd day with 3 or 4 crickets and maybe once a month fruit. I don't know if it is a male or female? (Striker sounds like a male to me, but on the picture it looks like a female) but also stop feeding calcium in combination with his food. Put in a small cap with calcium so he/she can take what he/she needs. The vitamins are ok to put on his food. Maybe you could buy some flies, so that he can do some sports on catching them.;-)

It's normal that laticauda are real shy guys, but maybe you could put the crickets in a glass/cup, where the crickets can't climb out and lean that against a brach, so that he can get in and catch his food. So you could count how much he must have eaten, even if you do not see.
