Fimbriatus vocalizing (LOUDLY!) WTF?

I was sound asleep. Then; "WRAAAAAAERROAAAAAAAAH" I froze in place, trying to comprehend what was going on. Cat fight?

My dog, next to my bed: sound asleep. Was I dreaming?

"WRAAAAAAEROAHOHAAAAAA" again, at a VERY LOUD decibel level.

Was it my fimbriatus? WTF!! Had to be. UNBELIEVABLE SOUND!

Anyone else experience this?

I have heard this sound many times. Usually it is associated with dieing, but you did not state that your fimbriatus died. Imports or old animals before they die will make loud screams and just extremely strange loud noises right before they die.

Another part of the equation....

I rec'd this "pair" about a month ago. Upon arrival, (in "c- grade" shape as uroplatus imports go, very savable, but not in the greatest condition). moderately rough shape. Very pretty animals, though.

The "male" had absolutely no hemi-penile bulges, but, slightly more pronounced post cloacal spurs than the female.

I assumed at their size 10"? that it would be a no brainer. Past fimbriatus experiences left no question.

So, I began my male search. Did I jump the Gun?

Now I can see a slight division in the spot where hemi-penile growth would be. But I would expect much more in an animal of this size.

The "calling" made me wonder even more. Young, developing male, or female?

I don't know that vocalization has anything to do with sex, but it's not a rare thing for them to vocalize. I disagree with camo that it tends to happen when they're dying.

In my experience, it happened while geckos were interacting in various ways. Peeps, chucks, screams...heard it all, and never once was it while an animal was dying.

PHEW!

Thanks Mike. It sure was startling, as was Camo's response! I'm so attached to these animals. They are in "stabilizing" mode. Rehydrating, and starting to get an appetite.

Any guess on a sex from my poor photo?

Relax....

It is just a "get the heck off of my back!"

My female henkeli did that all the time after the breeding season just ended...

My male would not leave her alone, when she was not receptive, especially a couple days before she layed her eggs, she would let out a squeal/croak when the male grabbed a hold of her.

It is no big deal...I had to separate the male due to his aggression while my female was trying to recuperate from a long breeding season.

What Camo is referring to is the squeal leaftails usually let out before they grab a mouth full of supstrate and die...

It could very well be male...I ve never kept fims but I have henkeli offspring that are almost 7 inches long and are showing absolutely no sign of a bulge...

If it was a henkeli that was 9 or 10inches, I would definitely say female...

But that thing still has time to grow..

Thanks for the replies. I heard another vocalization last night. Making me love these guys even more! I have heard tha phantasticus "peep" and "micro-scream", but these fimbriatus are DROPPIN" IT LOUD, LOL!

My henkeli and Lineatus are the more vocal of the bunch but it really only comes from unreceptive females. Other than that, the whole gang is pretty well behaved. I've only witnessed one case of male/male aggression which caused the males to quack up a little bit.

I cant believe you guys have never heard a Uroplatus give a death cry. It sounds like the loudest screaming; just screeching noise you have ever heard. The first time I heard it I turned white trying to take in what happened because it honest to god sounds like a girl screaming or just very loud yelling. I was talking to an importer on the phone once and he had a fimbriatus do it and I could hear it clearly on the phone and it still stunned me.

I guess me using "Usually", in "Usually it is associated with dieing, but you did not state that your fimbriatus died" was the wrong word. Just how you emphasized the sounds your animal made brought back memories of when my fimbriatus made that noise. I have never heard as loud of noise as you described coming from a stable animal. I do hear chips and barks but otherwise I guess you animal just felt like yelling.

I had a female s.sikorae do that...

She started cycling when she was not in my care...

She became deficient in calcium and would have a seizure every time I would open the cage...

She would let out that skreech/squeal, stiffen up, and drop to the bottom of the cage...she eventually died, but hung in there for a while.

Luckily, mine are thriving, despite all the commotion! I believe what I thought were two females, is indeed a young pair. I think the developing male (like any teen) is starting to become a real horn-ball. He is quite interested in the larger female, following her around once in a while, waving his tail. Under close scrutiny, I do believe he is just starting to develop "the family jewels" after all.

I know, right? I wonder if it's him, or is it her? My guess is that, as suggested earlier, that it's a "get the heck off me, creep" scream as he tries to mount her.

i had absolutely no idea that uroplatus species vocalized... do all species do that? or just some... cuz my sikoraes haven't uttered a peep... would be nice if they did tho :p

Tom,

I have had a male fim that didn't show bulges until about 10" or so. I have also woken up to that screech! They are crazy lizards.
