Considering African Fat Tailed

Hi, I'm looking at getting an African Fat Tailed. Money is very tight and I already have a Leopard Gecko in a 20 gallon long. I was wondering if it would be safe to combine them in the same tank and does it matter if they are male, female?

It is not a good idea to house them together because not only do they come from very different places, but the fat tails have higher humidity needs than the leopards. If by chance a male and female of the two different species are housed together, they will likely breed but the eggs will not be viable, a waste of the female's resources.

So how much would it be to get a 20 gallon long with needed accessories for a fat tailed?

Well, it would just be the tank plus the cost of a heat pad. If you're short on money try ebay for the heat pad (you can save quite a bit of money sometimes, I saved $30 by buying a couple heat pads there just last week) and search the classifieds for tanks. Besides that, the decor doesn't have to be expensive. You can use empty tupperware as caves and with a $3 brick of ecoearth, you can have enough of that stuff to fill up a good humid hide several times over.

Just look around first and then decide if you have the money at this time. If not, just wait a little until you do

(edit) You can try the dollar store for just about anything you need too, I've gotten dozens of food and water bowls for my guys for a couple dollars. And cute metallic ones too, not just plastic ones.

I would say: wait for better times! It's always good to have the money in the first place, to get a good and working enclosure for your gecko, than trying to get the gecko with just a bit of money left. Better wait another month or so, so you can get everything without pushing youself, the gecko will thank you for it!

The truth of the matter is, if you're tight on cash, you shouldn't be buying another animal. Save your money and when you can truly afford the appropriate set up, buy the stuff that you need and THEN purchase a new animal. There's no need to rush things. And to answer your original question, fat tails and leopard have entirely different needs. So, no...they should not be housed together. Take the time that you're saving up some money to do some research as to the requirements of fat tails as well.

How about not buying a new gecko but saving your money for the vet?


It could work if one of them is called "Thessa" or you traded them for a Flapjack called Frank:biggrin:

Right, if you need the money rather for the vet for your leopard, then you definitely shouldn't consider buying a new gecko at all.
