Phelsuma importation from Europe to Canada?

Hey everyone.

I may be way ahead of myself here but, in the next two years, I want to import some "uncommon" Phelsuma from Europe to Canada. I'm fully aware it will be very costly, and time consuming, be I'm wondering if it is possible? There are very few people working with rare spices such as guimbeaui, borbonica sp., cepediana, ornata, nigristriata, robertmertensi, klemmeri, to name a few. But firstly, would this even be possible for some one like me to import? Would I need an importation permit of sort? Does anyone know how much shipping would usually be from Europe (possible Hamm) to Canada (Vancouver, BC)? Also, who can I contact to send me such geckos? I'll be looking for pairs and several different bloodlines. I'm not looking to rush the possess, I want it to take as long it's needed for it to be carried out correctly.

Thank you!

it is my understanding that all phelsuma are CITES listed and therefore very difficult to ship from country to country. I have looked into it myself and i would be spending alot more on permits and shipping than on the animals itself it seems unless you can pay off someone that already has the permits.

I understand that. I'm more than willing to go though the, probably lengthly, process. When you looked into it who were you looking into getting geckos from (PM me if need be)? A start would be people who are ACTUALLY able to send me some Phelsuma :)

Canada is notoriously slow with CITES permits. I've tried to import various listed animals over the years. Many vendors would rather not ship here, or do the paper work for Canada because of how slow things go. You might want to check first if the vendor is willing to deal with a delay of many months. You also have to remember that you can't apply for a CITES permit ahead of time, the vendor has to do it for the specific animals involved in the transaction. That means you can't just go to the Hamm show and come home with the animals.

A word of caution here.I dont know about the availability of Phelsuma in Canada and the U.S. but dont expect to be able to buy all of the rare Phelsuma at Hamm.It is usually the commoner species that are avalable on the tables and you have to pre book the more unusual ones with breeders.
