Phantasticus slug...

Hey guys

since a few weeks ago i noticed my females were getting fatter. and today i found this in the food container:

Is this what they call a slug egg? It was laid by my youngest female.

Also what does this mean?
Should i expect good eggs the next month?
Should i give more calcium?
Should i seperate the male?

I haven't observed any copulation so it was a surprise for me! i only got them like a month and a half so imagine my excitement!!! :yahoo: :banana: :yahoo:

This is the female who i think has lain the slug.

Yes, this is what is called a slug, or "bad" egg.
I had the same with my henkeli female for 3 consecutive clutches, now she is producing fertile eggs.
Leave the egg where it is, your female could eat it to take the calcium from the shell back.
You can also offer her some small live snails with their shells as a calcium and nutrients source. No doubt they will be eagerly eaten and digested.
If you separate her from the male, fertilization would be less likely to occur
I believe the keyword is patience...

better luck next time, also as thor mentions you can feed the snails, but be aware that any unditected snail can and will destroy the plants when feeding on the,. So they should be monitored when feeding snails.

Yes about the snails: which do you guys recommend? Is it ok to feed snails from the yard like i read in the book from van Duin en Svatek. The hortensis is one i find very often in my yard. It's only hard to find some small one .

I knew what a slug is, but man, phants give it a whole new meaning it looks like flemgh xD

Young Helix aspersa or Helix pomatia work fine for my geckos...my adult female henkeli can eat 2,5 cm shell individuals if that helps

i haven´t feed mine snails yet. because I cant seem to find them.

But if you get your to take some snails down, then please explain how you have presnted the snai to the gecko(s)

I don't know how it is in Denmark this year but here it has been very dry so it is almost impossible to find snails in gardens. As Frenchies are snail-eaters biggrin: ) we have snail breeders who don't mind selling a few dozen immature snails for a few Euros. When I give snails to my animals (I suppose your question was for me?) I first heavily spray the tank then launch the snails not far from the Uroplatus' snouts. As soon as the snails begin to move, my animals go like crazy and eagerly eat them. It's as simple as that.

Thanks for the advice how to proceed when feeding snails. Well finding snails outdore at the moment is hard. And I havent find anyone hwo sell´s snails in denmark besides congo snails (the really big one that get as big as your fist). Have you any snail feeding experiance with phantasticus? mine dont seem to be interrested an any thing that aint moveing at a sertain speed.

I have never kept phantasticus so I cannot answer your question.

Just keep an eye out for them, know you now here cycle so you dont have to look for egg´s by her the next month. But tjek up on the calcium. and keep them happy. You are doing it rigth

Went to the woods today and found a bunch of cepaea hortensis, which are also recommended. Got some in all sizes, so i think some of them will be suitable ^^

HEy guys, a small update about eggs. Today i found two eggs sticked to a leaf of my ficus. One looks infertile, but the otherone has a nice chalky scale and looks fertile to me. Is it possible for phants to lay both one fertile and one infertile egg?

Hey Mallick,
I've never worked with Phantasticus but from my experience with other geckos, its very possible. Keep us posted!

Phants eat snails, and it works. I started breeding pomatia ^^, fed the on a weekly base.
Result: one bad egg and one goodlooking egg!!! It's in the incubator on dry sand with wet vermiculite beneath at daytime temp. 23.2°C and nighttime temp around 20-19°C.

I would try placing them back in there. I originally thought my females did not have any interest in them as well. I left them in there for a period of 4 days. After the Third Night 3 snails had been eaten and another 1 on the fourth night. The aquatic snails will stay in the lid/container you place them in if there is a small amount of water. I plan on putting more in tonight, I will keep you updated if you are interested.

Water snails (Limnea, Planorbes...) usually carry a lot of internal parasites, you never had any trouble feeding your geckos with those?
Not saying it should not be done, but it would be interesting to know especially if you have offered such snails to your geckos over a long period of time.
