Levis levis hatched this morning

I'm super stoked, after a year of unsuccessful hatchings, I have finally hatched my very first levis levis baby. Woke up this morning and spotted this dark critter in the incubator. Hopefully just a beginning of more to come.

Thanks for the comments:). Anyone know when its first shed will be before I can start feeding? Its about a week right?

Both of my N.l.l. babies this year ate before their first shed but I wouldn't be stressed if they hadn't by any means. Probably some variability in how the yolk gets absorbed too.

Great looking baby either way.

Yeah I thought I had to wait till the first shedding before feeding. I thought I missed the shed and I fed and he/she ate. The next day she shed. Good info meisen. These guys are so awesome to watch.

Looks like this will be my only hatchling this season. The other eggs look like they're going to go bad:(. Maybe you guys could help me out with these egg pictures. Am I doing something wrong or are they just not fertile? Can you guys give info on each egg laid as to what happend if they were fertile?

laid 9/29

laid 10/30, looks good but the stuff that looks like sand is actually this yellowish moldy stuff

laid 10/24 folded in half

Thanks for help appreciate it!

Did you dissect the bad eggs? That can tell you something ie did you have an embryo going or just a dud egg? Seems like eggs thrown towards the end of the season have a higher tendency to be bad (though admittedly based on very modest experience of myself and a few others) which does make sense. Sperm storage has a known decline in most animals. Nutrition is harder to maintain through the rigors of egg laying and as the females get tired out, they don't have enough energy to properly form the egg or something perhaps. I saw it in my snakes, If I got double clutches the second clutch invariably had a higher percentage of dead eggs and/or FTT babies.

I sort of use the following to figure out what went wrong with a given egg:

-molded early most obviously a non fertile or DOA egg
-dried up early as above or too dry a substrate
-molded mid incompatible with life embryo, contamination or incubation problem (usually too cold)
-molded end often still viable but also can denote embryo death. These can be many things, egg got too dry over time, temps incorrect, genetic problems, weak embryo couldnt get itself out, no egg tooth formed, egg suffocated. O2 requirements increase as the embryo gets larger, lower surface area to volume ratio=less O2 available for the growing tissue.
-dried up late likely forgot to add moisture over the incubation period.

That one that has some mold but is otherwise looking good might still be viable...mold on the surface doesnt always mean its going to go bad.

The one with the folded corner might be salvageable....try dripping a little water near (~2-3 cm) it into the perlite (NOT ON THE EGGS OF COURSE!!!).

Both of those I wouldn't give up just yet. I have found my neph eggs tend to dent a bit (+/- week) just before they hatch though its a bit early for that on your 10/31 egg. I actually added some water to the containers as described above out of instinct when I saw that, don't know if it helped/hurt/did nothing.

What are you using for incubation medium moisture? Are you working off of .8:1 by weight and then just keeping the weight up or something else like a premix or? Do you have a humidity source in the incubator?

Thanks that is some great information to know, was very impressed. I dissected one of them, which was laid alongside this egg that hatched and only yolk came out. I use perlite 1:1 ratio. I did not add any water to the incubator but that is an option.
