My new Tokay Enclosure

Hi everybody , I am finally getting a tokay !!! If everything goes as planned I shoud go get him Friday or sunday.

The story is that I had a Hogg Island Boa ( Boa constrictor Imperator ) that was given to me with the enclosure. But the 20g tank was too small for her and she wasnt living a happy life in that small space. Getting her a bigger enclosure was a problem because i dont have the money to afford a bigger tank so today I decided myself and I went to the pet shop. They gave me 100$ of credit for my Boa. I know she will now have a big tank and the guys at the pet shop do know really well about reptiles. So I am not scared that they will sell it to a good person and give them Good advices.

So here the Tokay setup I Made using stuff i already had and using 60$ of the credit. They should receive new Tokays Friday or sunday :yahoo:

What do you think of it ? If you have any advices and Usefull information on Tokay and their enclosure it would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Tokays don't tend to use hides on the ground very much unless it's the only option they have. You would do much better with some vertical tubes (pvc, cork bark tubes, paper towel tubes, etc) that they can hide inside or slate tiles leaning against the wall that they can get behind.

Thank you Ethan. I was looking for hides that stick to the wall but couldnt find any. The slate tile seem to be a good idea , I will probably get one and try it.

Congrats. He looks nice and healthy. Is he a captive bred tokay? Something simple like a paper towel tube(s) will do for a temporary vertical hide.

Thank you. I dont know if he/she is a CB or a WC but im thinking more of a CB. I am already seeing him more on the walls and moving around. I putted crickets in there and also Superworms and i cannot see any right now. Some might have hid in the substrate but i think he already ate a couple. When I will be off from my work ill try to get him a PVC tube for hiding.

A couple of days to go and i will try to sex him/her. Glad he's already coming out from hiding a little but still go hide back when im getting too close of the enclosure.

help

hey, from reading your replys on Gekko gecko, it seems you know some about them. can you help me. whats the best watts for a gecko(.18x18x24 long) I have a hide for hher with a heating pad below. she will stay in her hinde all day ( having her head half way out the hide), Only coming fully out when I mist or feed her. I do she her chill on the walls at nite. In the morning when I wake up she is back in her hide. In one of your replys you wrote" TG dont need a ground". should I get loose the ground hide and make them pvc pipping ones.

Yes even the simple suction cup plants that hang on the wall If you have enough of them work great. I like those, they are easy to maintain look relatively natural and my toks hide behind them. If your tokay is hiding all day on the ground Its probably a bit stressed and searching out darkness they are arboreal and mine don't even come to the ground to drink. Really they stay on the walls at all times. I dont mind the PVC tubes and the bamboo tubes. Some have great success with them. I had a female that ended up staying in it at all times and that made it really hard for me to monitor her. She was breeding and it was imperative for me to monitor her. But... That's just one experience out if many. They are very secretive animals and when the lights are on they want to hide. But since they love to be in trees we have to give that to them.

Thanks for info. I dont thing she is stress out. (I could be wrong) My first reason, I can somewhat see her in the hide and she is bright in color. She has no problem eating, I think some times she if I let her would eat all the crickets i get (100)lol, so no problem there.

I change her tank a lil last nite, pining up a large piece of wood and a bounch of plants in the side of my tank, making a large space for her to hide behide, while chillin on the walls. Do you think I should take the hide from her tonite when the light go off and let her find the wall hide area?.. Also once I 100% know the sex of my TG, (i was told my the pet store it was a female), i want to get another one. If this does happen, so ?I have to do anything to make sure they get along.

I would take the hide out from the floor but she will also come and explore on her own. If she is a female she will be fine with a male or another female. You don't really have to do anything special to make sure they get along. But before you put the new one into the established tank you DO need to quarantine. You can do this in the simplest of setups in a ten gallon tank. This is usually done for 30-60 days and it's to make sure the new acquisition is healthy.

What you describe is normal tokay behavior (other than hiding on the ground). They're nocturnal, so they hide during the day and come out at night. I like using PVC. If you're worried about being able to get her out if needed, they make pvc in dimensions that are big enough around that you can fit your hand inside. Personally, I just usually give them a little shake or gentle poke with a stick and they pop right out. I'm also a fan of using natural slate tile leaning up against the side of the tank. Just make sure that it's secure enough to not fall over on top of them to avoid any accidental injury. Fake or real plants work well as hide too. You don't have to find a way to stick them to the wall. You can simply place them in a green or brown plant pot and then arrange them as necessary...especially easy to do with fake plants that have wire centers. The point being that many things will work but the end result is that the tokay will be most comfortable hiding behind something that allows them to be on the wall. More than one hide spot will certainly be appreciated by your tokay. As for a "friend", unless you plan to breed them, your tokay would likely prefer to be alone. A second tokay simply means competition for food and hide spots. If you put a male in with her, there is a very good chance that they will breed. So, you might want to take some time to be sure that you're really prepared to be able to handle the responsibilities involved in dealing with that as well. It can be a lot harder to deal with than one might think.

Edit to add: Cork bark and/or tubes work well leaned against the wall as well.
