Ok, I've recently taken a huge interest in lizards and pets. I'm only 14 and never owned any lizard. Can anyone tell me what would be good for me? I'm in high school and want this lizard to last me allmthrough high school and possible to college. I also have an interest in bearded dragons is that a good idea for me or not? Thnx

There are several other people asking the same question here. Generally most people suggest a leopard gecko or a crested gecko. Bearded dragons are larger and more responsive pets. That also means that they need a bigger enclosure (36" length minimum), and make more of a mess when they poop. All of these reptiles can live 10-20 years which means that you'll still have them when it's time to go to college. You don't have to worry about what to do with them now, but it's worth thinking about if there's no one else in your family who's interested. Many dorms don't allow any pets at all.

To figure out which reptile may be for you, google "[type of reptile] care" and read a few caresheets about each reptile. This is how I decided to get my first reptile, a leopard gecko (I read all the reptile caresheets at a big petstore and got rid of anything that seemed too involved and only had one type left). Most of the information about each reptile will be the same, but there will be some differences. Read the posts in the specific forums here about the different reptiles you're interested in (find a bearded dragon forum to read about the beardies). Ask specific questions (many of these questions have been asked already and answered, so look before you ask). That should help you decide what to get.

Most of the nocturnal animals are "easier" to Care for and have less comprehensive set ups. Beardies are great as long as you are financially and totally ready for the equipment costs as well as their daily maintenance. Beardies along with many other diurnal animals (active in the day) require UVB lights that simulate the sunlight. Any animal that youre interested in make sure you do as much research as possible. Ask as many questions as possible and be sure your new acquisition is healthy. Be sure you can maintain that animal for it's entire long life. If you get a baby that could be 20 years. I recommend for beginners cresties or leos bc of their easy going attitudes and low care requirements. And then as you get more advanced if it's something that still interests you have at it. Always have the cage and necessities on hand and fully functioning for at least 24 hrs before getting your new animal just so you dont have any surprises. I hope this helps.

Yes You Should - But Education Yourself First

Hi Bearded Dragons make great pets. They have really placid temperaments and display some rather amusing behaviors. They do however require a fair bit of equipment to house them and you'll need to buy or breed crickets to feed them. They also eat vegetables as well, but that's pretty easy to come by. You'll want to make sure you can afford to set up an enclosure properly and also have cash on hand in case of vet bills. Here is a good resource that will tell you everything you need to know.

Hope this helps!

If you're in school all day, what you want is a nocturnal animal because they're waking up and coming out just when you get home and have dinner.

Mine, even though they are nocturnal, will come out at the sound of my voice and will poke his little head out and give a signature leopard gecko grin!
