I just change out the tank this weekend. Got rid of the sand and put in slate tiles. When I brought the tiles home I scrubbed them in hot, hot, hot water with dish soap, then rinsed in hot water really well. Once they were clean I put them into the oven at 350 for about an hour just to make sure there was nothing biological or viral on them. Once they were cooled back down to room temperature I took Buffy out of her tank, dumped the sand, rinsed the last of the sand out with hot water, washed the tank, rinsed, sterilized the tank (I make wine and used the same sterilizer that I use on the wine bottles, sodium metabisulphate), rinse again for about 10 minutes with warm water fully spraying the entire tank while it was upside down in the sink. I then dried the tank really well and put the tile in along with her hides, food and water bowls, etc.
She was't too sure about it at first, was somewhat confused at the tank change over. She seems to really like it now though, especially over the area where the UTH is. I've seen her quite a few times flattening her selfout on the tile warming herself.
