change in substrate

i had to take out ther reptile carpet it smells like poo (even though i always take it out Daily) & pee/ammonia.
any way how should I go about cleaning it?
for now i had to put paper towel, will this stress them out?

thay might be a little stressed but thay should be fine, cant help you with cleaning i don't use repti carpet for that reason.

You should be able to hand wash your repti-carpet with mild soap and warm water. But ive read that they are even washer safe - but to be extra safe you could stick it in a pillow case and then put it through the washing machine on a gentle setting.
And putting paper towel down should stress them much at all. The large of the two geckos we have has been on 4 kinds of substrate in 4 months! paper towels, repti-carpet (which unfortunatly didnt work out well as the leo kept getting her teeth stuck when catching crickets!), a coconut substrate (messy and too moist) and now calcium sand (since shes big enough now to know she can only eat on a large flat rock in her tank).

p.s.
the gecko loved each transition onto new substrate (except for when her teeth got caught! =/). She never seem stresssed at all. she loved exploring each new one and now seems happiest of all! She diggs around in her calcium sand and wiggles around as is shes making "sand angels"! =]
So I dont think changing the sunstrate will cause any stress unless they encounter a specific issues with it.

While Neo was living on repticarpet I never once noticed any sort of foul smell. Is it the poo which emanating the odor or is it something else in the enclosure? Foul smelling poo is usually an indication of impending health issues...hence the reason I ask.
