Phelsuma Grandis Consistent mating and Egg Laying.

Hello All,

My G.D Gecko Krush Is about to lay her second clutch off eggs.. I give her Zoo-Med Calcium with D-3 when I feed her... She layed her eggs on the July 8th.. She mated two days after with her partner King Who is 2 Times her size I don't want her to have any calcium deficiency.. The reason i am concerned is because she has little or no calcium sacks what so ever...And I can see the eggs through her skin. The first clutch were beautiful healthy eggs.

Is it bad she keeps laying eggs so fast?

I don't know what I would do if she passed.. I would be heart broken I have had her since she was a baby.

And last of all... She would know what she was doing right? she wouldn't be doing it with out knowing her natural behaviour and if she was in any danger?

Thank You Guys,

Any answers are extremely appreciated.

This website and forums are filled with some highly knowledgeable people.

GU is the best.

Hey, female Phelsuma can/will start to lose their calcium sacs as the breeding season carries on. As far as Phelsuma go, with a lot of the species you can see the eggs through their skin. I have not bred P grandis though so I'm not sure if it is common to be able to see their eggs.

As far as combating the lack of calcium you can try supplementing extra. I am using Repashy Calcium Plus. It has lower levels of a couple of the goodies that can be borderline toxic in other supplements. I hope someone can post some good links about this- here is one So confused about Repashy Calcium Plus.. - Page 2 - GeckoForums.net

As far as frequency goes it can vary some. My P laticauda has laid eggs with as little as 23 days inbetween sets and much longer between. If all the husbandry requirements for them is met they will lay and lay and lay. One thing you can do is seperate your pair. This can slow down egg laying. At the same time, the female will lay eggs regardless of being mated or not. If she lays dud eggs sometimes they will eat them(getting some calcium back!)

Keeping the geckos as a pair doesn't really leave all the options to each animal. Phelsuma will fight too if things aren't going well. My P pasteuri don't like each other much at all when the girl is getting ready to lay eggs. On top of this, I have to give them 2 feeding dishes of the Repashy Day gecko MRP because they fight over the dish(Even though there is more than they can eat in 3 days in the cup)

You'll have to decide if your geckos are getting along and if the eggs she is laying still look "good". If either doesn't seem right I'd seperate them and give her some recovery time.

I would separate them mainly as a last resort because reintroducing them may cause your pair to go through a dominance struggle again and from the sounds of it your girl is much smaller.

If calcium is your concern, you can leave a separate dish of calcium in the tank for her. If you use the repashy MRP or something else like clark's diet you can can try adding small amounts of additional calcium to the mix. Increasing feeding frequency of insects might help as well. They should be dusted and your female probably needs to replace a lot more than just calcium if she's laying that frequently.

Yes thank you both for your responses.... To Re- Introduce would be a disaster.. They are doing great she jumps on his back time to time now and they lick each other a lot..... It is hard to find rephasy here in San Fernando Valley.. Guess I have to buy some online... she really hates the calcium i have For her now.. Thanks again guys

Any other responses are still welcome

Thank You.

It's always cheapest to buy repashy online. You can order it at Gecko Ranch in bulk. If you only have the pair a 1-lb bag might last you 6 months and for $18.99 that's no big investment. As far as calcium goes, I have been using Miner-All. It's a great product that was suggested to me and I hear it has a berry scent.

This is where I buy my Repashy products from. Julie is awesome to deal with as well  She is friendly and helpful!

Agreed, Julie is the best. From what I hear she also helped provide input for the Phelsuma MRP produced by Repashy. I use that diet for my grandis and most of my rhacodactylus as well. They all love it.
