Leopard gecko: Just an update on Sobe (and a few questions lol)

Hey everyone, just figured I would post an update here. Sobe is eating good and starting to really grow. I have pretty much gotten everything downpacked by now I think, I do have some questions though. Sobe still is not to fond of being held, when I go to get him he will run around his tank until I catch him, is this normal? I try to hold him a little bit every other day... Also how often do you guys change your calcium dishes? I am not even sure Sobe has touched his yet... how can I make him try it? And finally Sobe still prefers mealworms over crickets, can I make mealworms his regular diet? If so what do I need? The guy at the petstore said I needed a special kind of bulb to give them energy, he said I should have been using this bulb anyway which is not what I have heard, I thought a UTH was sufficient...?

Dont let the pet stores sell you things you dont need. UTH is fine as long as your temps are right.
Mealworms move once they are warmed up so you dont really have to worry about that. Put in a food dish with some mealworms and Sobe will do just fine I think. I would keep offering crickets maybe not daily. Eventually Sobe might take them.
I change my calcium once a week when I clean the tank. I didnt think Star was eating it either but I caught her in the act :)
As for taming, dont pick him up if he is running from you. Put your hand in the tank for 5-10 minutes at a time and hold still. At least once a day. It shouldnt take too long for him to come up to you but let him get comfortable with you before you try to pick him up often.

If Sobe is a young gecko, they are more skittish when they are younger. So time is your best friend. Some people will suggest just grabbing them and forcing them to like you. Yes that can work sometimes, but giving them time also works well without stressing them out. What you want to shoot for is when they stop running away from you. You already described Sobe running away from your hand, so he's definitely not used to you yet.

I've found that it sometimes makes it easier to just let them settle in and get used to you being the "food guy/gal". Once he knows you aren't there to harm him, he should stop running away, and you'll be surprised how easily he'll want to climb onto your hand.

There are all sorts of different methods people find that works for them, so find one that works for you. Also Angey already said it, don't let pet store employees talk you into buying things. That happened to me when I first started getting into this hobby. Fool me once... once is good enough, never again. You will find much better advice online from forums like these. UTH is perfectly fine for your gecko's heating needs.

Now without lighting, you will want to supplement D3 into their diet so they can properly absorb calcium. You do this through dusting, once or twice a week should be good. There are multivitamin powders that contain calcium and they are great to supplement your gecko's dietary needs.

I would say that it is NEVER necessary to change the 100% pure calcium you have in the tank 24/7 unless it gets debris in it. Pure calcium really never expires :).

Are you using phosphorous-free calcium with D3 for lightly dusting Star's prey about 2x per week?

Yes I use phosphorus-free calcium with D3 2 times a week. 2 days pure calcuim, 2days multivitamine and one day no dusting. Once I figured out how to dust the crickets it became easy :)

A D3 supplement that's great to use for dusting is repashy calcium plus. It's a multivitamin all-in-one supplement that contains everything your gecko needs, plus D3. Highly recommended.

You can skip buying calcium w/ d3 by using that above, and use that as your regular multivitamin dusting routine.

Thanks, I'll have to look for that one. Right now my bottels are full so I will keep using what I have for now :)
