lighting for vertical tanks

For those that use a aquarium converted to be vertical how do you light them since there is still a piece of glass on top? Do you remove that glass and replace it or use another method? thanks.

You have to elaborate. Is UVB your concern? In most cases, UVB or not, fluorescent lighting makes no threat to glass. The concern should be whether UVB travels through glass and if so, what percentage.

For the tank I am working on, the glass on the top (well what is now the top) was cracked, so I removed it and now have replaced it with 1/4 inch hardware cloth (you could use smaller openings if you wanted). It was a pain to do, but if you want to avoid the issues with uv rays being blocked by glass, I think it is almost necessary.

I have thought about the UVB issue. I just want to know what other people have done and if there is a easier way then removing the glass and replacing it with hardware cloth,. plexi with screen attached,etc.

Not really. If you want to expose the animal to UVB then you'll have to remove the glass, glass filters it out. Personally, I don't use UVB, just CFs set directly above the glass ceiling.
