Getting 2 new rescues!

Ok so, someone offered me to rescue two Leopard geckos. I'm getting their tank ( I believe is a 20gal) and all the other goodies for a very small charge. They have recently been to the vet and are parasite free and in good health with big fat tails. I'll post pictures as soon as I pick up the buggers. Now, I have a question. This pair is a male and female pair that have been together for a long time with a second female. The first female however attacked the second and she lost her tail and died. Now, the female I'm getting has never(?) mated or at least never produced eggs. The second female (the one that died) did produce one clutch but they were infertile. Should I worry about these guys mating? I don't want to breed any of my geckos. Should I wait and see how these guys do together? They've lived together for all of their life (3.5 years old) so I just want to make sure everything continues to go well. Any suggestions?

Well, it is in fact weird that this female attacked the other one to the point of killing her, perhaps she is what some people call a Hot Female ?? (An Agressive, infertil female) I'd wait and see how they behave and decide then if to keep them together or separate them.... great that you got them!!!

Yeah, It sounded a little like that to me. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I should be getting them soon, within the week. The best part is I'm one of the only people the person who runs the shelter knows who wants geckos. So, in the future I may have many more geckos!! Yay! Again, I'll post pictures of them as soon as they arrive. They're already hand tame too! I think that if you adopt everyone wins!!!

If you don't want to breed them you don't have to incubate the eggs. May seem sad to toss the eggs but some people do that. Just remember the male will want to mate, the female may or may not accept him. If copulation occurs, she will lay eggs and you would need to make sure to take extra care of the female as egg laying can be stressful.

Some people believe it's more natural to just let them mate and be what they are, and some even feel it's good for their health to do so. Others don't believe in letting their female get gravid if they don't intend on breeding, because it does put stress on the female, and some females have known to get egg bound and die from complications. Then of course there's the chance of male bugging the female too much, which could cause either a big fight where they could injure each other, or the female would get too stressed out.

So there's your pros and cons, you are the owner so you get to decide whether to keep them together or not :)

Thanks Mardy. I just think it's strange that they haven't mated yet... They've lived together for 3 years..... I guess I'll just have to wait and see. Thanks again!

If I could express my excitement in text format you would only see this:

*head explodes*

This is perhaps one of the big reasons why people think I'm crazy.... But, yes, I am very excited to expand my gecko collection. By the end of the year I'll have four! 3 bunnies and 4 geckos.... I think everyone can tell what I'm interested in....

Adoption is the BEST option!!! One thousand percent agreed!!! I also am a volunteer in a shelter and it fills my life in so many many ways I can't even start to write it down!

Yeah, my Yoshi is my only animal I didn't adopt.... Soon to be 2 leos and a garg will be out lastest adoptees. We also have three bunnies that we got from the same SPCA in Buffalo where we used to live! I'll bet they thought we were crazy when we filled out the paperwork for the third one!!!
We are planning to adopt human babies too. I agree Saskia~ the best way to go is adoption! There are just too many people and animals that need our help. Why bring more into the world when they are waiting for the good home they deserve!

Thanks Roy! I'll keep in contact with you when I get my rescue rack setup in the near future! Is your girl still with you? Give her my love! Hopefully one day I'll get her home or I'll just have to get another rescue from you if I can't get her! I wish I could tell you when... These two fell on me for the right price. I also need to get a hold of some spare tanks...... What an obsession this is.....

Yeah I know the feeling. I have all the tanks in the bedroom by my side of the bed! It also happens to be the warmest and less noisy room in the house! I just need them beside me!!!
