Silly question on firing

I have been researching and reading as much information as I can find on my newest obsession, the gargoyle gecko, and I'm happy to report I will be getting my new buddy in May at the local reptile show. :yahoo:

While I find plenty of pictures and talk about "firing up" and "firing down"- I can easily see the difference, but I don't know why or when they do it?

Thanks in advance for your explanations ;-)

They tend to fire down during the day while they're asleep and then fire up at night. This is not always the case but seems to be the norm with my gargs. They also fire up against darker backgrounds, during breeding, feeding/hunting, if stressed, and sometimes whenever they want.
Good luck with your new one when you get it. They are a great species. I'm super happy with my little ones! :)

Thanks Kelly! Yours are pretty darn cute, I've been browsing the forum for a couple days now. :)

I'm ridiculously excited to get started, get her home set up, and get her home. I've been harrassing the breeder with long emails, researching til my eyes hurt, and now I'm starting my Pangea wishlist :) My nephew will be even more excited when I tell him, he's a typical 5.5 year old and absolutely obsessed with anything creepy and/or crawlie. He's coming with us to the reptile show, and I can't wait to see his face :cheer:

Probably my favorite gecko, I love the mini-crocodile look of them and they have a great temperament. Nothing beats seeing these pudgy gargs right out of the egg.

And I wouldn't call it "harassing." I love talking about geckos and would talk anyone's ear off if they let me.

What can I say, I love to learn. The mini-croc look is what got me interested in them to begin with.

If the man himself says I'm not harrassing him... I'll keep on bugging him! :nana:

Tony, don't get too deep now.... Because soon I'll be harassing you for more gargs too! :) I know you got Andi's first garglet that she produced. After a bit of a debate and a sudden bulge dropping, I think I've got her first male! :)
Sarahberry, We'll talk geckos with you all day! :)

Oh Kelly, I'm adding a hatchling from Vesper and Vaako's first clutch, too. Lots of red this year! Breeding 1.4 this year and 1.3 are red base.

Sarah, before I hijack your thread entirely I think the firing up/down is for survival. They tend to be fired down and more dull during the day, probably to avoid predators while they sleep.

Waiting on eggs from this little girl:

Tony: I think I remember Andi telling me that! :)
Good luck with your breeding season!

Sarah: Sorry! I didn't mean to hijack your thread!!! :) We just love our gargies so much!

No worries Kelly! I think you guys answered my question, so hijack away! I'm happy to hear/read whatever I can about my new best friend and her relatives! :yahoo:

p.s. yes, I am both over-excited and overtly excessive with my exclamation points!  and emoticons.
