feeding options

hey guys,

I hate asking questions, but my wife keeps nagging me to ask. She expects me to know everything but I never kept a tokay so anyway she has a 2 year old tokay. She feeds him dubias and crickets She tried phoenixw orms and silkies, but he won't eat them. She wants to know if there are any other insects that are safe to feed? If not has anyone found a way to get them to eat silkies?

High quality gut loaded crickets and roaches are the main stay of feed for captive Tokay. Most of the worms are too slow to get their attention since they like movement to stimulate a feeding response. They do not really like meal worms or super worms either.

One 'worm' that is a favorite is the Goliath Horn Worm. These big green monsters are attacked voraciously. If you put in really big ones, the Tokay will repeatedly slam them violently against the enclosure before gulping them down. A real show for sure.

Some Tokay will also take live pink mice but this should be a rare treat and not really needed unless you are looking to put weight on the animal.

Yes, They love those big green worms!:drool: Oh and as for the silkworms did you offer a very small size? If so that can be the problem. I am always so paranoid with prey size and so I offer everything to the smaller side, but with no success. I tried a larger size silkworm and my tokay tore it :lol: So try a size a bit bigger to see if it works.

Thanks, I didn't think he would go for them, but my wife just ordered them. As for the pinkies no way, I well never feed a mammal to a gecko.

Damn your good. Once I read it I offered him a bigger one and he swallowed it right down! :yahoo:

They are really good with a little bit larger than average food. I used to be super paranoid about that as well. But when you start seeing even little ones banging food against the wall to stun it and then they gulp it down you realize they know what they're doing even more then we do.

Crickets and roaches are your best staple diet. (with calcium dust). Other options are:

Wax worms.
Meal Worms.
Silk Worms.
Horn Worms.

Some will say these are unhealthy for your gecko. Well if you use it as a once and a while thing, with crickets or roaches being the staple diet, everything will be fine. I like to feed my female Tokay a couple horn worms a month.
