You know, this really depends upon the store and the staff. I work for a large pet store and we are lucky enough to have a staff of people who care. We do THE BEST we can do with what they will give us. And trust me were vocal on what is needed. And if someone is hired who doesn't seem to have the heart for the animals, they don't last long.
Above all of our habitats there is a number to call if you feel the animals are being mistreated or poorly cared for, I urge you all, write that number down and CALL! YOUR VOICE HELPS! But evaluate closely and make sure you complain about the right thing!
Are the habitats clean and well cared for? is it obvious the animals are receiving care, just maybe not the proper care? Don't get someone fired who cares, but just isn't being given the proper tools to do there job.
If our animals look the slightest bit sick we keep a heavy eye on them. The MOMENT they meet the qualifications to be taken to a vet there taken right in! This is at one of the big box "Devil" stores.
You know if one of our animals get sick (were all friends on facebook) not a day goes by were not asking about whats going on with it to one another, consistently asking for updates etc. And should a heartbreak happen and one of our animals leaves us, there are tears, sniffles and broken spirits. We see those animals every day, we feed them, clean there cages and celebrate when they find a home. We do what we can to educate future pet parents on the current and future cage requirements for there pets, the life expectancy and dietary needs etc... AND when we get new pets in we may not know much about, we spend hours on the internet on sites JUST LIKE THIS researching beyond basic care guide information. And we dont get paid for that time.
There are a few good ones out there, ones who care
