Leopard Gecko: Humidity for moist hide?

Should a moist hide be a constant at all times? Also, I really like the Exo Terra gecko cave...I was thinking of getting that and making it the moist hide. It looks extremely realistic and the whole top of the rock lifts off. The base has a lip that can hold moss, eco earth, paper towel etc.

Any ever use this??

Question...how do you maintain the humidity in there?

I know for my GTP's we have a fogger that keeps the humidity up. is there something on a smaller level for my geckos moist hide?

There are different ways depending upon all the species you are keeping in the same room.

Humidifier in the room
Extra water dishes
Covering a section of the screen
Drippers
Fountains
Foggers

I believe that keeping the RH at 40-50 in the enclosure itself helps maintain the humidity required in the hide itself. The opening of the hide should not be too large. Use enough sheets of paper towels and add enough water. There are many variables and so you have to wreck your brain sometimes before you find what works for you.

Im using moss right now instead of paper towels....what is your take on that?

It holds humidity better, but I only use it for my female due to the obvious reason, the chance of producing infertile eggs. The problem with moss is accidental ingestion while eating their shed or if insect make there way in the hide.

I thought of something for a moist hide;

paper towels are safest, and moss retains moisture better. Well what about linen? Fabric?

I thought of making a small "pillow case" out of some high thread count linen and leaving the slit (opening) on the bottom (as opposed to the side like regular pillow cases). For the "pillow" I thought of stuffing if with moss. Now you have a moss hide with a safe (?) covering that can not be ingested accidentally by your gecko. Since it is linen/cloth/fabric, the sides would be sewn so it would be completely washable and all you need to do is replace the moss every so often.

Any thoughts on this??? I just don't know what a safe material would be to do this with. But I think the idea would work...at least it does in theory!

Thanks!

Sounds like a great idea! Just the size of the moist hide! A loosely woven fabric might work best??? How about an envelope-type opening for the moss insertion? Kinda like a flap of material overlapping an end opening?

Stuff the moss into the pillow case until it feels medium-soft next to the leo's head, not firm.

Absolutely!! It's such a simplistic idea and project that the pillow case can be made the exact size of the floor of the moist hide!

Do you think there is risk of the gecko's toes getting caught in a loose woven fabric though? I thought of something with a high thread count to ensure a safe lie.

and the pillow case should definitely be packed in the medium range...not too much where it's a mound, but enough to create a nice level surface while still being thick enough to hold the right amount of moss!

Choose a fabric NOT too loosely woven. Fabric should "breathe" some. Don't want to create an environment for mold.

Elizabeth, do you think this would work???

Sew Essentials-Unbleachd Muslin 36'' : muslin : fabric :  Shop | Joann.com

It's 100% cotton...cotton breathes.

Also, sphagnum moss is supposed to be very good at not growing mold and mildew. But yes, changing it out would still be a must. And the Pillow Case would be washable!

I think we're on to something here! :yahoo:

Yes! I even have unused light beige/white cotton fabric in my fabric "bin". I could send you some tomorrow if you PM me your address and let me know how much you'd like.

Thanks, Elizabeth! I'm going to stop by my local Joann fabric store this week for some other things. I'm going to see if they happen to have this fabric or anything similar. If not, then I will take you up on your offer! Thank you so much!!!

I hope this works out well! It sounds like such a comfy idea! :D
