after years of keeping female panther geckos together in groups of 5, i am seeing agressive behavior from 1 of my girls. this group of 4 have lived together for a year but i recently added a fifth female who does not seem to be involved as she does not interact much. These are the most mellow geckos i have ever seen so i m surprised. The agressive gecko followed one of the girls into the hide after a raised tail stance and mounted the other girl til i took her out to make sure she wasnt a male! Is this harmless jockying for position or am I at risk of some one dropping a tail? I removed her but she does not seem happy living alone

Just like with any animal or person, different geckos have different personalities. It may be just a temporary thing, or it may be that she's just not social. You're not only risking tail loss, you're potentially risking death. But it's one of those things that only you can really access and determine the right thing to do. Of course, the safest thing to do is remove her. But then again, she may be fine once she settles in.

no, the bully isnt the new one. it s one that has been living with the other 3 for awhile. im sure adding the 5th one shook things up a little but that is the only 1 that isnt involved in the behavior. regardless i wont put her back in with my gentle girls. always plenty of crix etc for all so that is not an issue.

Just like with humans, sometimes there's people that simply don't get along well in group situations. There are things that you can try like giving them a bigger enclosure and adding more hides, etc. But at the end of the day, she may still end up being a bully.
