power outage questions

hey everyone!

So as I was woken up by some very loud thunder and couldnt watch tv because "signal was completely lost" (stupid Dish network), I thought about what would I do if my power went out and I didnt know when it would be back on. I mean, I suppose I could try to get them to another house like my parents but they live 45 minutes away from me. I was wondering what other people have done? could you split the wire coming out of the surge protector bar and "ghetto rig" it to a marine or car battery? I dont know exactly how to do that, and i would need to buy a new surge bar after I have cut the end off that goes into the wall but it was a wild 6 am thought. I have UV and Heat lamps that would need powered or some temporary fix. Thanks in advance everyone!!!

You could buy a generator (gas or propane powered). You could use an inverter to run stuff off of a 12 volt car battery but the battery wouldn't last very long. It doesn't look like you keep overly delicate species. So most would probably be just fine depending on the temps and how long you were out of power. A lot would really depend on the particular situation. Obviously the thing you would need to worry about most would be heat if the power went out in the winter. Something like one of these "buddy" heaters would be a good thing to have to keep a room warm if you lost power in the winter: Mr. Heater - America's Most Popular Portable Heaters
Your herps can do without UV lights for long periods of time. But obviously keeping the temps up is what would matter.

Thats what I figured. most of the time, the power is out for 6 hours max and my room is noramlly like 65-70 during the winter, so I didn't think it would be bad but I was just curiuos on what would happen or what to do if it happened for longer.

btw, i have one of those little buddy propane heaters for hunting, do you need a vent or does it not matter? would I be abe to heat a room if i wanted without a vent? i mean i know that is off topic butttttt im kinda curiuos now haha

It would depend on how long you were going to run it. I wouldn't run it all day without a vent. If you're planning on doing something for several days, you could get a small ventless blue flame heater for around $100 and run it off of a BBQ grill bottle.

Personally I Use a "Glo Warm" heater for Emergency Heat.
A dual purpose safety pilot system protects against oxygen depletion and any interruption in fuel supply. If either occurs, the gas is shut off to the burner, turning the heater off. Best thing is with a pilot light is that they can be ready in standby during storms. No need to rush home or get up during the Night or fret if your away and an unexpected storm comes in without warning.

Left Button is Pilot Light igniter Right Knob is Temperature control

Bottom you see the Thermostat

Mine was a return at the end of Winter a few years ago and was on clearance for $20.00

That's what I meant by a ventless blue flame heater. They're nice too because, even if you don't have gas hooked up to your house, you can run them off of a BBQ grill sized propane bottle which is cheap and easy to aquire at most gas stations, Walmart, 7-11's, etc. And one bottle of propane will last several days under normal usage.
