High localized/ basking temperature + low ambient temperature/small surface area to bask = burns. Increase your ambient temperature (what is it?), potentially decrease your basking wattage (what is it?), and/ or increase the surface area the animal has to bask.

I see this more commonly when keepers of larger lizards have low ambient temperatures with high wattage bulbs that do not provide enough surface area for the animal to bask.

The only gecko I had that was burned was a P. grandis. The bulb was a UV producing compact florescent. This is one of the bad points of UV compact florescent.

UV compact bulbs are more likely to burn due to the UV waves that are not visible and more difficult to judge as they don't translate accurately with a thermometer. I.E. think about why people burn when getting tanned -- the sun's UV burns the skin rather than the heat.

The best way to prevent this is to pre-check the temperatures at the basking spot and avoid the UV compact bulbs or go very low UV numbers.
