Figuring things out.

Although my gecko is still not full size i believe i have officially sexed it and i know its morph. For me this is a big accomplishment because its my first gecko. But my leopard gecko, Roxanne (Roxy), is a female Hypo Tangerine Carrot Tail. She loves to eat and has been more active since i bumped up the temp in her cage and started using slate tile. And a big thanks to Geckos Unlimited for helping me figure out this website. I'm still learning but i'm getting better :) But yeah check out my page or whatever it's called and look at my pics ;-) ill put up more soon!

Hello ~

You and Roxy are definitely welcome!

Good to hear that you're figuring out GU, posting on the regular threads, and that Roxy likes her slate tile and warmer temperatures! Sounds like you found the Leo Guidelines?

How is Roxy doing for calcium and vitamins?

You can even share pictures right on these posts :yahoo:.

Vitamins

Thanks Again! And as for vitamins im using Reptolife Plus powder on all of her food. I've asked a few pet stores for some calcium but none of them seem to have it and they also tell me it is not essential to the geckos health to have calcium. Some of them told me that the gecko will never use it and it would be a waste of money. But it seems to me that calcium is crucial to the health of my gecko. And here's a pic of Roxy eating! :yahoo:

Are you Michael? You're welcome.

Nice to meet Roxy in "person" even with her mouth full ;-).

You are definitely correct that calcium is crucial to the health of your leopard gecko. Geckos not supplemented with calcium with D3 will get metabolic bone disease sooner or later. There is much conflicting info "out there". We try our best to clarify. Please check the Leo Guidelines linked right below in my signature for more info on vitamins and calcium.

Is this the vitamin product you use: Tetra ReptoLife Plus Multi-Vitamin Formula (1.77 oz) If so, I don't see any mention of vitamin D3 or vitamin A acetate in the ingredients or any details for that matter. Perhaps that is in the "small print"? I recommend getting Reptivite with vitamin D3 and vitamin A. Lightly dust the prey 2x per week.

You also need a pure calcium carbonate powder to leave in a small bottlecap within the cage 24/7. NOW is a human brand pure calcium carbonate that can be found at health foods stores or online. ZooMed and RepCal also manufacture pure calcium carbonate powders.

Wow thanks for all the info! This is why i joined this website :) yes that is exactly what i've been using. It does not contain the vitamins you mentioned but it seems quite nutritional. I will be sure to get the calcium supplements you mentioned, but does that mean i should stop using the reptolife plus? But anyways, Thanks for everything! And quick update. Roxy is extra hyper and ive seen some vids of leoaprd geckos swimming in very shallow tubs. Would it be alright if she took a quick swim? Thanks bye :)

I have personally seen my Leo licking out of her calcium bottle-cap, so Yes they use it and it's not a waste of $$

You're welcome.

Vitamin D3 is crucial to bone health and the metabolism of calcium. That is a must and handy to have included in the Reptivite formulation! Vitamin A acetate helps with eye health. However, too much vitamin D3 is as bad as too little.

Having trouble finding a link to your Tetra supplement which displays the actual ingredients. If you can help there, great!

The only time leos really need "baths" is if they have stuck shed remaining post shed. Placing leos in water, and it should only be belly-deep, is stressful, but necessary to gently loosen stuck skin.

thanks guys, In that case ill skip the bath ;-) I can't find a very good link. But i did find some of the reptocal from tetrafauna that has the calcium and vitamin D3 you mentioned and i will order it as soon as i get permission from the parents  but i think it would be safe to not only use the calcium powder 2 times a week but maybe throw in some of the other stuff im already using occasionally. I also have a UVB light and i feed her crickets so she should be ok on the calcium for the time being, correct me if im wrong, until i get the reptocal. Also i will start searching for a calcium lick for her cage as well :) Thanks again bye

No, no, no. Get ZooMed's Reptivite with D3 instead. Without a better link I can not tell how good the Tetra product may be. Reptivite with D3 is tried and true. Dust lightly with it 2x per week. Use nothing that we have no more details about.

Too much supplementation is as bad as too little.

No need to have a separate calcium with D3 product.

With the Reptivite with D3, then all you need is a plain calcium carbonate for the small bottlecap in the tank 24/7.
