Diplodsctylus substrate question

I'm looking to switch out most of my sand dwelling geckos, and would like to stay away from spending 100 bucks plus on the few acceptable ones out there. (I have quite a few that are on sand right now)I was curious if others use the following.

Pool filter sand
Sand box play sand
Beach sand

I know one of the first two is definitely no good. I also keep African cichlids, which are fine on either. Because of that though, I have forgotten which. The last, as I live on the coast, would be free for me. I have heard of some people using it, but I have not personally.
Any opinions, or other suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey Mike, I use washed/play sand for a majority of my geckos - including some Diplo sp.

It is completely safe and a lot cheaper (~$6 for 20kg) than the rip off 'reptile sand' they sell at $25 for 5kg.

Thanks Sam. I knew one was safe for reptiles, the others are not. As I said, African cichlids, and keeping them on the expensive stuff cost me that little bit of knowledge. I used to keep Ackie monitors on a mixed substrate with it. It's the silica that's the problem, correct?
