Hello all!

Today i took in a six month old leo with a broken leg. It was housed with an adult giant almost three times her size. The giant bit her back right leg, and it looks like its snapped just above the knee.

She is walking around and putting a small amount of wieght on it....but it bends all directions and is pretty limp. I know theres not much out there in the way of pain killers for geckos, but is there anything i should be doing for her? I have her in a large cricket keeper right now so she cant walk around as much. I handfed her six dubias tonight- didnt have to force her....she was hungry!

Anyway, im just looking for some advice. If anyone has any experience with this kind of thing id apreciate any thoughts or ideas! Thanks! :)

All depends on how bad the break is. You would need an xray to be sure. A vet could possibly put the Leo under and make a splint if it is a clean break, but based on the area of the break that might be tough.

If you are truly concerned than a vet visit is in order. Specifically one that specializes in herps.

Hi ~

A warm welcome to Geckos Unlimited :yahoo:

(Another example of why leos are best off housed alone.)

How recent is this broken leg?

Strongly recommend a vet visit right away with a herp vet experienced with leos.

Check right at the beginning of the leo caresheet linked right below in my signature for several links providing help locating vets.

I know theres not much out there in the way of pain killers for geckos,

Actually medication for pain is available. As already mentioned, take her to an experienced reptile vet. A radiograph is necessary. Hope all goes well.

As much as I want to take her to the vet, I just can't afford it at the moment. Any other time it would be fine....stuff seems to happen all at once. x)

But in the way of an update! She's doing much better! I'm beginning to wonder if the leg was broken in the first place....there is still some swelling above the knee, but she's walking around and climbing on things. She does bear weight on it and it doesn't wobble anymore....makes me think she just tore some muscles or something? I'm not sure...but she doesn't seem to be in near as much pain now and she's still eating good, so I'd call that progress! :)

Thanks for your update on your leo's progress! Your details are much appreciated.

Nice to hear her appetite is good!
