Hi, I've been thinking about getting some kinda exotic pet for sometime. I've been advised to start small so I've decided to have a look at gecko's.

Hello and welcome! I highly recommend leopard geckos. I have one, and he's my first pet (exotic or otherwise) and I absolutely adore him. My only 'warning' is that if you're looking for a pet to cuddle with and handle a lot, a leopard gecko would not be the pet to get. They tolerate handling, but generally don't like it. I'll put my hands in the tank and if he comes to me, great! But I don't force him to come out of the tank.

Good for you on researching ahead of time! There are a lot of helpful threads on this forum with great suggestions about tank set up, diet, and other resources.

Here's my sweet little Reggie:

Thanks for the suggestion. Looking around the boards I was beginning to lean that way (I saw a post from cricket4u which was very helpful in that regard), though I'm a tactile person so if I can find a breed that likes a bit of petting I may go that way.

That will actually depend on the gecko. My leo loves to be pet. When he wants me to pet him, he stands on top of a specific rock and just looks at me. Then he lets me pet him for a long time. I've read on here that other people's leo's don't like to be pet, so I guess it depends on their personality?

are you anywhere near a herpetological society or rescue? possibly you could rescue a young gecko and get a chance to handle it before committing? usually when getting an animal from a rescue, they want a good home and a good fit and are less concerned with making money than a pet store. another option would be to work with a breeder to get some choice in temperament.
