Unconventional anniversary present

Hi there. My boyfriend and I recently adopted a 1 year old female leopard gecko. We are both new to the gecko world, although both of us have spent a lot of time around pet reptiles. We decided to get Caroline Fernando Lola for our one year anniversary and we've had her for just a few days so far. It's been amazing. I stumbled on this forum while looking into the best feeders and so far I've learned a lot. Below is a photo of my beautiful girl.

Greetings and awesome present.. I would recommend changing out that loose substrate because it can cause impaction. But if you are going to continue to use it please be aware of the risks, such as impaction, eye infection, etc. The risks can be lowered by tong feeding, food bowl, and putting gecko in separate enclosure during feeding time. ( this can cause unnecessary stress on the gecko). ( thanks to superleo98 for this info). A safe alternative would be paper towels or tiles. Best of luck, enjoy your new friend. :)

Oh, it's actually a water-based clay that is completely safe for her. It started out loose and sand-like, but has dried to a hard, textured surface so it feels like dirt, but there's no chance of it coming loose and being ingested. It also helps keep the temp regulated because it holds heat on the hot side, but stays cool on the cold side. Thank you for your concern though!! :)

Welcome to the gecko world, it actually is a welcome sight that there is atleast someone who keeps their leo the way it should be kept instead of on paper towel or tiles.

I want her to have a habitat as close to natural as possible, even though she's captive breed, but still be safe and secure for her well-being. :)
