Parcing eyes: how do you do it?!

There's so much talk about eyes--eclipse, and marble and snake eyes, etc. But..but, I confess, I can't really see them! I mean, what do people do? Their eyes are are, well, small. Especially hatchling eyes. On a couple of my adults' eyes, I can clearly see the nice vertical pupil. The hatchlings look pitch black. Is it just a matter of time before the eye will be readable? Do people usually photograph the eyes and then study the photos to see patterns, etc?

Or does this simply mean that I really must take that glasses prescription in and have it filled?

(by the way, what kinds of cameras are being used to capture those very close-up eye pictures I've seen? Can it be done with a cell phone?)

Thanks for any tips

Can't give you any advice about taking pictures. In some cases it makes sense to wait till they get bigger. Otherwise it either becomes obvious or you can use a magnifying glass. It's unlikely that the eye differences will show up with no genetic predisposition, though I do have a male normal-eyed Tremper born 2004 who produces snake eyed offspring when paired with an eclipse (eclipse gene was not known in 2004).
