So today I was given this little gecko in desperate need of some TLC. I wasn't going to take in any more rescues at this point because I want to focus on my leopard gecko and ball python projects, but when I saw this poor thing I couldn't say no & had to make sure he or she was properly taken care of (it's hard to even determine the sex right now because the gecko is so emaciated, maybe female.. but I didn't want to man-handle too much looking for pores as it's been a stressful day). There was a big patch of stuck shed over one eye, some on the eye itself.. and tight shed wrapped around almost every toe, the only ones without were toes that were missing or partially. I'm not too sure the history of this little one, just that it hasn't been looked after and needs help asap. I may decide to find a loving home once/if it makes a full recovery!
I gave him/her a nice soak in warm water, took the shed off the eye and as much as I could get from the head and the toes, I think there is a scab above the eye aswell which is possible because it was being housed with 2 other geckos (both also in bad condition & taken in by a friend of mine). Now this little one is relaxing in QT in a clean enclosure eating a bowl of mealworms :) good appetite that's for sure, I hope to have a happy healthy gecko as soon as possible *fingers crossed*

Poor baby! I'm helping a sick gecko, too. He has a mouth infection and is extremely skinny. He had stuck shed on every toe, but I managed to get all of it off.

Awww poor baby. Congrats and good luck on nursing it back to health. His drinking water and soaking water should be mixed with a little pedialyte for the first week to ensure he is hydrating well.

Aww I hope your gecko makes a full recovery! I''m going to have another go at the last couple toes after another soak! I think a rest was in order, it's hard to hold firmly enough without feeling like the gecko will get hurt, so extremely frail :( feels to be a bit soft/lacking calcium (there is a bottle cap of plain calcium in the enclosure for him/her to re-stock).

Thanks for the advice Neil! :) I havn't actually had to use it with my last 4 rescues, they have all come around quickly with bowls of food & fresh water available at all times, close monitoring to make sure they are eating & drinking with normal stools, heat and a clean environment. If I don't see immediate progress like I did with the others then I will definitely go down that route!

Here's an update so far with the stuck shed taken off, there is a big scab on the snout & bite mark around the eye, I think this gecko is lucky to have the eye still in good shape! (I had another rescue that came with a similar wound but also missing most of his eye aswell :( just an example of what happens when leopards that aren't compatible are housed together.. always best to house seperately.)
This little one had more energy today when I was toe-shed-picking.. that's good to see at least!

She's missing sections of at least 2 on each hand, and the nails on the remaining ones (all 4 feet basically) are all twisted and mis-shapen from the stuck shed on there for so long :(


She's looking better to me already and her energy level has gone up quite a bit, she even chased down some crickets yesterday which now seems to have stimulated her appetite even more. She's finished a bowl of mealworms already today and seems to be on the right track! (&her stools look surprisingly not bad, very yellow urates in the first one but have gotten whiter with daily water intake). I think she's had some broken bones or a case of MBD, her right hip doesn't sit properly and her lower ribs on the same side stick out pretty abnormally. This poor little sweetie has been through hard times :( I'll keep updating as we go!

That's great news! Hopefully the MBD isn't too bad so you can reverse it. She looks so much better!

Here is another update :) She's extremely frisky with a huge personality, I just love her lol. She's going into shed now, hoping the scab on her face will fall off with that!

Elizabeth I'm very proud of her!! :D when I saw her I was unsure if she had some additional illness to starvation but she's been doing so well, it's rewarding to see her so spunky. I Will try and get a video of her on cricket day next week.. she's such a great eater & so much fun to watch! ^.^
