Its 2015 and I debated whether this thread was more apt to stay here or be moved to health and diseases. Well that's why we have monitors/moderators. Again its 2015 I live one state away from a "legal" state, not a "medical" state. I would assume and would never let anyone smoke cigarettes in the same room as a gecko but for those of us who don't have a reptile room or have a chill spot where we have a "display" LG has anyone heard, read anything about the effects of moderate use of incense in the same room as the herp?

Google is amazing.

Incense smoke: clinical, structural and molecular effects on airway disease
Page 15 discusses effects on rats but the entire study is a good read. It breaks down the chemicals released by burning incense and gives you a good idea just what you are inhaling as well as your gecko who is 1/1000 your size.

I imagine some are worse than others. I would stay away from cedars as the aromatic oils are known to have a carcinogenic effect on animals and people. Still I wouldn't burn incense often, and near an open window if I did.

Same goes with pot, IMO. If it leaves resin on your walls (and it can), it will leave the same stuff in your gecko's lungs.

There's no way it can be good for a gecko, it can only be detrimental. So why risk it?

Also from my experience, i would never smoke a cigarette nor light an incense in a closed room let alone a closed room with my pets inside.

It took me a week but there was an article by a DVM in Reptiles Magazine...her opinion is its fine, she uses incence, candles and aromatherapy in her practice.. I dont know....they said that about tabacco once;-) Also she does warn if you have any worries, doubt's don't. All of her data came from avian studies (DUH!) I guess it boils down to you. I guess I would be concerned about cigarette smoke and incence and pot, aerosols, candles, pesticides etc...I dont think its fair since the gecko doesn't have choice in the matter. Its the little things we dont tend to think about sometimes.
