Gecko Business

When I find an apartment and we settle in, I'd like to start breeding leos on a small scale. There aren't that many of them in Scotland and I want to create a business that focuses on healthy, happy geckos rather than just pumping them out for money and providing proper information about keeping them. It would be great if I could get some opinions on some of the things I want to focus most on! Keep in mind that I'm aiming most towards families/first time buyers.

1) Like I said, I want the geckos to be happy and healthy. I don't want to sell any too young, I think I'm going to hold them until they're 4 months old, unless they're unusually calm and/or big

2) I want to try as hard as I can to socialise them as much as possible before they're sold, spending time with every single one at least twice a week

3) I'm going to focus the most on normals. A lot of the people I know think that normals are the prettiest and I'd like to just take it easy and line breed for certain markings/etc. This will also mean I can offer lower prices than most of the other breeders around. I will have a few "fancy" morphs but I think that normals are a bit under appreciated and I'd like to have them as my "gimmick"

What do your guys think about these ideas? If you have any suggestions to improvement or changes, please let me know! :3

I think it is an awesome idea, to add some i think you should introduce new people when the babies are getting around that age where you would sell them and maybe have different people feed them at different times if this is possible. That way the geckos will settle in faster to their new homes. And you could have basic care sheets that cover most of the important information on them to hand out with the gecko. I personally love the high yellow and orange colors in geckos.

One of the things I'd like to work on, is making nice bright normals with carrot tails. Donut already has some really nice carroting (about 30% of his tail!) so I'd like to pair him up with a girl with a nice orange tail to build on that :3

Having different people feed them is a great idea, I'll definitely try to get that working. I want to kind of take the classic large breeder "warehouse" aspect away and have a facebook page where we post lots of photos and videos of all the silly things leos do!

Sounds nice! You should do an inspection of their setups prior to every adoption! And also breed your own insects to sell to your buyers.

To help keep an eye on their health, I'd personally purchase a microscope and become very familiar with the parasites that may be found in their gut flora. Do not take diagnosing and treatment into your own hands, but use it to catch any abnormally high parasite loads that may arise early. This is just something that I've always wanted to do because I find this sort of stuff fascinating, but I thought it might be worth mentioning! :)

Good ideas! My dubias have just had their first babies today and once we move and have more space, I can breed mealworms too :3 I think the system will be that people can say "I'm interested in this gecko" and I'll send them an email with a checklist for what they need and a link to a caresheet. If they don't have a setup ready, they can pay a small deposit for me to hold the gecko for them and then I'll take the rest of the money and ship the gecko once they've sent me a photo of the setup. I'd also like to have a "takeback" policy. If for some reason someone can't keep the gecko any longer, they can send it back providing it's healthy (not entirely sure how to do this yet, I guess I'd need vet records of parasite tests)
