A tale of stuck shed woe

Scooter has been a little shy lately, so I've gone back to just putting my hand in the tank for a couple of minutes and letting her sniff it. I was so excited last night when she actually crawled on my hand! I took this as a symbol that it was okay to pick her up.

I let her crawl around for a while and was feeling pretty good about her stress level and this being a positive experience for both of us, when suddenly I noticed that first the first time she had the dreaded stuck shed on her poor little toe! :yikes:

Anyway, I stuck her in her cardboard shipping box while I looked for a tupperware container that she could soak in. I filled it about half an inch with warm water and put her in. Scooter was NOT a happy camper, and it didn't do much to help the stuck shed. I then put her back in the cardboard shipping box (this lizard is going to start associating that place with "time out") and found a wet Qtip.

I normally don't like to grip Scooter, but I did have to hold her torso place while she squirmed so I could work at the stuck shed off. I felt horrible, I've never seen her squirm so much. But eventually I did get it off. Her toes look maybe a little swollen, but otherwise okay.

I'm pretty sure I can blame the stuck shed on forgetting to mist her moist hide last night, plus having to use a CHE in the winter. I'll continue to monitor regardless.

Scooter proceeded to "sulk" in her cool hide for the rest of the night. I am positive I have now earned Scooter's "World's Worst Mom" award. My boyfriend later told me Scooter should understand that I was only trying to help her. I did try to tell her this, but I couldn't quite get the intonation right when speaking gecko. My bleps are terrible ;-)

I guess there's nothing to do other than monitor for any further stuck shed and slowly get her used to me again. Anyway, just wanted to share because I figured other people on this forum could relate!

I have yet to deal with a stuck shed *knock's on wood* but I'm sure it will be just as traumatizing for both of us as well. You handled it like a champ and I'm sure scooter will forgive you :)

I feel for you guys.

I was dreading this happening to me and my Gecko long before I even bought her, because I also use A CHE for keeping air temperature up I find I too must re-moisten the humid hide daily.

Luckily I still haven't even seen her in the process nor has she had a problem yet.

I know it feels bad to "restrain" them but really it was for her own good. You'd rather her have all her toes and be grumpy for a bit than suffer missing toes in the future, right?!
It sounds like she'll get over it. Just keep at the hand taming and that's about all you can do. She'll come around. I have yet to have a gecko truly hate me for the whole time they've been in my care. I like to be sure to hand tame them all as it makes life easier for them and me. lol

V is currently still sulking from a Qtip encounter last night too! One little claw. It was really kind of funny because after being squirmy and freaked out she eventually realized I wasn't going to leave her alone and lowered her head on the towel all comfy and defeated haha. Don't feel bad ;-) I kept telling her it was like having a really nice pedicure.
