Finally got the OK from the wife to get some dubia. Figured while I was at it I'd grab more mealies to hold me over until colony is grown up plus add to my colony, some supers, and a cup of hornworms for a treat. The dubia are faster than I expected and the hornworms are very cool. Nothing like the post office calling about live animals waiting for you and the ewwwww you get when you say, " yeah my bugs are here"

Took a few tries to get my last guy to take the dubia but they're all on board now. Just ordered another 100 dubia! I'll be starting a dubia colony now.

Not to ruin your good vibes here but you're going to need more then 100 if you want a self sustaining colony fast. I would recommend getting as many adults as you can. Darkness, heat and oranges will be your best friend for starting a colony. Good luck! :D

Yeah the 100 I ordered are just for feed. Took me this long to get the wife's ok on them even being in the house lol. Will give her a couple more weeks of adjustment then I'll order adults to start the colony. In this case my mealworms were the "gateway" bugs haha

I know people get grossed out by roaches, but I think dubias better than crickets - they don't escape, they don't smell, and they don't chirp!

(That being said, the dubias always go into a cabinet whenever anyone from apartment maintenance is over )

Dubia's are just awesome for sure, Crickets are great for variety, Blacks gutload very well also. Breeding them however, is not for me anymore.

Fair! (I'm lucky enough to live near a reptile store that stocks them, so I get the convenience of not having to pay for shipping AND I don't have to go through the trouble of breeding them)
