Flighty Leo?

I got my Leo secondhand about a month ago, and since then, I have noticed that he is very flighty and will jump off my hand, even if I am holding him at a very high height. He will also just simply walk off my hand when I am holding it off the ground. I am still in the process of taming him, and based on how often he sheds and how long he is, I'm guessing he's a juvenile, but I can't be sure, seeing as I don't have the right tools to weigh him. Since I have learned this, I have made sure to only handle him on the ground, but I am wondering if this is normal, or if anyone else's gecko does this?

Hi ~

I wonder whether leopard geckos actually have depth perception. It's best to handle them close to the ground or a couch......something solid.

How about sharing a picture of your leo? How long is he from snout to tail tip?

That's an interesting question, Elizabeth. I handle mine on the bed, but she eventually becomes fascinated with the edge and will continually run (more like wiggle!) over and try to climb down. She either doesn't realize how far away the ground is or doesn't care! She has taken a tumble or two which hasn't been enough to deter her. :-/ Thankfully it's not too far down and onto carpet. I have to watch her like a hawk when I have her out, can't turn away for a second! Mine has never jumped out of my hands though, but she's older and very tame.

I think some are just stiller than others when you pick them up. My leo will walk right onto my hand and let me handle her, but she is typically "on the move" while she's out of the tank. My setup is on the ground, so now that I think about it, I'm usually sitting down when I hold her.

I once saw a juvenile leo jump off a counter at a reptile store and onto the rubber mat below. I wouldn't *recommend* this per se, but the leo was fine ;-) I think as long as you keep an eye on your guy, he'll be okay?
