I'd Like to Hear Some of Your Gecko Stories

Hi guys! I've gotten a lot of feedback on my new gecko, Rowan, recently, who is still hiding and is actually really mad at me right now because I had to get him out and change out the paper towel. (Like, he's still sulking and it was two days ago.) The little goof-ball is a work in progress, and at the rate he's going, I'm thinking that it's going to take him a pretty long time to start domesticating.
I'm curious to hear some of your "New Gecko" stories, partially to see if mine's behavior is at all normal, and mostly to listen and see if I can pick up any good tips. PLEASE post in this thread ESPECIALLY if you had a really shy and stubborn gecko who came round eventually- I'd be encouraged by some success stories!

Hey there,

My first Gecko was extremely shy and frightened, as bad as I have ever seen, it took me 6 months to make any sort of progress with her skittishness but she has now come on leaps and bounds.

Much of what I learned from attempting to befriend my new pet is recorded in a taming 'guide' of sorts which you can find it towards the very end of Elizabeth's excellent care-sheet here http://www.geckosunlimited.com/comm...cularius-demo-video-4-jan-2013-update-14.html if you need some guidelines.

What I can tell you, with confidence, is that your Gecko will come around, its down to your care and consideration as to how long that will take.

Good Luck !

My leo was shy and skiddish when i first got him also. The first time i picked him up he jumped right out of my hands and pulled a usain bolt right under my TV stand. So instead of just picking him up i started gradually sticking my hand in the tank right before feeding time. At first he just kinda looked at it from a safe distance then he gradually would get closer and closer to it, licking it and eventually crawling right onto it. Cleaning days were a pain during this phase. I'd say after half a year or so of owning him he was totally used to me. He would crawl on my hand as soon as i stuck it in and come out to watch me while i was in the room ( not in hides just out and about ). Sometimes even try to climb out of the glass when i got close until i would stick my hand in, then he would get right on it and just hangout and crawl up and down my arm ( likes to crawl up to my neck / shoulder area ) Your leo will definitely get used to you over time. Once in a while ill change up the decor layout of the tank and he will walk around and examine where everything got moved too and then find his favorite hide and hide for a day until he feels safe enough to come out again. He only goes to his hides now when he needs the heat or moisture, usually right after he eats or during shedding. The rest of the time hes just hanging out of his hides watching me or climbing on stuff.

Yes. It depends on several factors: how old they are, how big they are, how much they eat, how often they eat, and what they eat. When I feed mine crickets, there poop is a lot bigger than when I feed mealworms. If you let them free feed on mealworms then their poop will be somewhat smaller than if you feed them once or twice a week. I choose to keep mealworms in the dish all the time so they can eat as they please...unless they start getting too fat.

Hi, I've had my leopard gecko for about a year and a half now and he hadn't eaten for about 2 months or so, his tail is still pretty plump, and he is still somewhat active. I've tried feeding him crickets, mealworms, and small super worms, he's about 6" long maybe a little longer and his temperature is set at around 85 and I always have water and food set out for him. He drinks water all the time but I never really see him eat. He has 2 hides, a moist and dry one. Can someone please help me. I've tried searching everywhere but I have no idea what to do. I'm thinking of taking him to the vet if he doesn't eat sooner or later. Just don't want to jump to conclusions and take him to the vet for no reason. Oh and he also hasn't really been popping either. Just peeing I think. But anyone please help me I would like to know what is going on with him. He's a Leo btw

The temps in your enclosure could be off. Leos need 88-92*F ground temp underneath the warm dry hide. :)

Is 85*F the ground temp on the warm end?
What type thermometers do you use?
A leo needs 3 hides: warm moist, warm dry, cool dry.
