Hello,
I am building my new leopard gecko setup and would like some feedback. I have a thread in the substrate sub-forum, so until I decide on a substrate there isn't too much I can do with the setup I guess. This will be a 20 long that houses my 7-3/4" female and 9" male, 10 year old retired breeding pair (sort of) of leopard geckos. The reason I say sort of is because they used to produce eggs regularly, but I never hatched them.
This is sort of their retirement home. They are in a very ugly setup right now that is about the equivalent of a 10 gallon tank that opens from the front side (not an Exo Terra but a knock-off of it that was broken and costed me $20). I obviously want to go bigger, so I already have the 20 long ready. It will be naturalistic as well, obviously.
One main feature I want is mostly for my female - she's kind of weird, she likes to run around through the water and sometimes soak in it (even when she's not anywhere near a shed). They're healthy, it's just something weird she likes to do. So she's going to get a bigger watering hole in her new setup.
Both my geckos, mostly my male but my female as well, like to climb. I've been getting nervous because they started to climb the screen on their cage - I am moving them to the 20 long today or tomorrow (with some reptile carpet or paper towels, heating lamp, and their hides and water bowl) so they don't injure themselves. Well, they seem to enjoy it so I would like to incorporate a background for them to SAFELY climb on. I have seen a few of them, made from polyester foam and such. I think this is the route I will take for that.
I like the look of some plants in the tank, so I plan to include a few very natural-looking fake plants. I don't have a huge budget for this build, so I don't want to have to buy natural plants only to have to combat humidity levels, or to have them die and then replace them with fake plants.
I am still deciding on what the hides will look like, I thought about one being a burrow however I would like to use a solid substrate - meaning that if one of my geckos went in there and I had to get them out, it would be impossible. So the hides will stay above the ground (or maybe partly in the ground, so long as there is a way to get them out).
Might draw up some sketches today and post them. Please feel free to leave any feedback you've got. Thanks!
