Leopard gecko isn't pooping!

Hi all,

Well, it's January, meaning it's time for my annual "is there something wrong with my gecko?" freakout :(

Scooter has decreased activity lately and is hanging out almost exclusively in her cool hide. I know this can be normal in the winter. Whenever I offer her mealworms, she very eagerly gobbles them up. However, she's not pooping! :( If I lift up her cool hide while she's in there to check on her she'll head on over to the warm hide, but ultimately she'll end up back over in the cool hide.

It's been about a week now since she pooped. Last night I gave her a soak in warm water, and I'll do the same tonight. At what point should I call the vet?

The only other thing of note is about two weeks ago she ate a horn worm that was a little big for her.

(As a note, the local reptile vet is great but pricey, so I'd rather not take her in if I'm reading too much into this. I do fret about her a lot!)

Heating
Do you have a thermometer(s) in the cage? Yes
What type and brand of thermometer (digital with probe, temperature gun, LCD strip, analog (circle), combo digital thermometer/hygrometer, stainless steel aquarim type, other): I have two Jumpstart Hydrofarm digital probes. The one inside her warm moist side is set to 91, and is connected to the UTH. The other measures her cool side, is not currently connected to anything.
What is the ground temperature right on the substrate under the warm dry hide: 88 to 92ish.

Ventilation space for your UTH by elevating the tank above the shelf (some UTHs come with sticky feet for the tank corners): Yes, also going to add some tiles, don't want my apartment to catch on fire!
Are you using a thermostat(s)? Yes, one for UTH.
Which hide does she/he spend most of her time? It used to be that she always slept in her humid hide. Recently, she's been sleeping in her cool hide.
Is the temperature decreased at night? by how much? Right now no.

Humidity
Is the humidity measured? No
Humidity range: Unknown

Diet
Insects and worms, list type: In the past, dubias have been her staple. She has gotten picky recently so I've switched to meal worms. When I can, I add in variety like silkworms or hornworms.
Regular diet fed to the insects and worms: Bearded dragon food, collard greens, carrots
Are the insects and worms formally “gutloaded” 1-2 days prior to feeding off to your gecko? If so with? For the refrigerated mealworms, I take them out about 12 hours before feeding and put them in a container with turnip greens and oatmeal. The dubias have the collard greens and bearded dragon food.

How often do you feed your gecko? Every other day - every three days
Please list any supplements (with brand names) used. How are they given and how often? ZooMed Reptivite w/o D3, some kind of calcium without D3 (can't remember the name)

What calcium brand are you using? Don't remember the name, but it's without D3
Is the calcium in the tank with D3 or without? Without
Multivitamins (include brand name)? ZooMed Reptivite w/o D3
Please list any recent additions/changes in the diet: Recently Scooter has been turning her nose up at dubias, so she's been getting mealworms.

Hey, no one has really answered your questions so I will! I have dealt with something similar, it doesn't make me an expert but I will help the best I can.

1) Your temperatures are correct and correctly measured, so heat shouldn't be an issue. It is good that she is still eating as well! While I discuss eating, I want to mention that feeding an adult leo every other day might be a bit much, depending on how much you feed each time.

2) Food can cause impaction, so it can be an issue, do you see any dark spots on her tummy? Does her belly feel hard or soft?

3) Remedies -

***NOTE: If she stops eating, doesn't poop after 2-3 weeks (Although I'd say that would be pushing it), and is overall declining in health, I would reccomend the vet immediately. I am not a vet and cam only reccomend home treatment from my own experiences, they may or may not work for you.

Baths -

•Fill a shallow container with lukewarm water only going up most of the way up her belly
○Note that dehydrarion can contribute to digestive issues
•Soak for 15-20 minutes every day
○You can also give her a gentle massage to help get things moving

Laxatives -
•Try 1-2 drops of olive oil on their snout so they can lick it up

I do not know if the problem has been resolved, since this was posted a little while ago, how is she? Hope everything goes well! This could serve as help in case something like this happens again.

I'm sorry no one responded in a timely fashion.

How is Scooter doing now?
  • Verify the thermostat's setting.
  • Check ground temps underneath the warm dry hide.
  • Place the Jump Start's probe underneath the warm dry hide. That's where my temp recs are based.
  • Hornworms are 85% moisture. I doubt that would have bothered her.
  • Mealworms keep better at room temps.
Buy Zoo Med's digital thermometer with a probe for the ground temps? Petcos have a yellow one for about $10. I tape my digital's probe to my Jump Start's probe and leave them on the ground of the warm dry hide 24/7.

Scooter needs a supplement source of calcium with D3! Since you already have Zoo Med's Reptivite multivitamins without D3, get some Zoo Med Repti Calcium with D3? (My Petco carries it.)

Have you seen this suggested schedule, muffin_song?

#126---Monthly Feeding & Supplement Schedule for leopard geckos 18 months old +

If a leo is doing well at 12 mo, here's the Feeding & Supplement Schedule I recommend next:

Feed an adult leopard gecko crickets or dubia 2x per week and mealworms 1x per week:
Crickets or dubia>Monday
Crickets or dubia>Thursday
Mealworms>Saturday

  • Use Zoo Med Repti Calcium with D3 1x per week. Lightly dust it on half the crickets or dubia, not every insect at that feeding.
  • Use Zoo Med ReptiVite multivitamins without D3 lightly dusted on crickets or dubia every other week or 2x per month. Maybe only lightly dust half of the insects at that feeding.
  • Use some plain precipitated calcium carbonate (purer than oyster shell calcium). The NOW brand sold in health foods stores is ideal.
Feed finely ground Zoo Med's Natural Adult Bearded Dragon Food (or an equivalent high quality dry diet) 24/7 to the insects and worms to cover the basics. Add high calcium, low phosphorus veggies like collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, and pesticide-free dandelion flowers/greens in a dish off to the side for extra calcium and for moisture! Vary your leopard gecko's diet. Crickets, Blaptica dubia, hornworms, Phoenix worms, and silkworms are all good.

Nutritional Comparisons of Insects & Worms

Monthly Schedule for Leos 18 months old +
Week 1:
Crickets or dubia>Monday- Zoo Med Repti Calcium with D3

Crickets or dubia>Thursday- Zoo Med ReptiVite multivitamins without D3
Mealworms>Saturday- no dusting

Week 3:

Crickets or dubia>Thursday- no dusting
Mealworms>Saturday- no dusting

Week 4:

Hi Elizabeth and Poppy,

Thanks as always, and my apologies for not responding with how the story ended! (I've been traveling recently and didn't see the responses).

So after about 10-14 days of her not pooping, I made a vet appointment. Of course that night I came home and she had finally pooped  I ended up keeping the appointment, if for no other reason than I wanted her to have a checkup. The vet said she overall looked well, although she could put more weight on. She's currently around 62ish grams, and the vet said she wanted to see her with a little more.

Her pooping schedule slowly got back to normal. About a week ago she went off food right after finishing her shed, while at the same time becoming much more active. She did something similar last year - I wonder if it has to do with the weather becoming more spring-like?

I'm currently out of town and having a friend watch Scooter, but will review the supplement schedule when I get home. And obviously if she's not back to eating I'll monitor that closely. Lately she's been a picky eater and will only eat mealworms , so I wanted to do a review anyway.

I'm always grateful for the support around here!
