Stuck Shed on Tail, Please Help!

I recently rescued this guy from craigslist, and he is in pretty bad shape. I just noticed that the end of his tail is very rough and has a little red nub on the tip. I really want to help him get the skin off, but I have never had to take retained skin off the tail before, and he is already pretty skinny (39 grams at 8 inches long), so I cannot afford for him to drop his tail! Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I try to take it off a heal it, or do I just let it die off? I know that red nub is already dead, but I dont want it to get worse! Please help! I added pics:

How about if you soak the tail and then just try to pull off anything that's actually loose --where there's an edge sticking up. It's possible that eventually you'll get it off by just pulling at what looks like is ready to come off. You could also try a bit of oil after you soak to see if that provides enough moisture for it to slip off.

Just put some wet/moist paper towels in his hide. The shed will come off. Works every time.
Not sure what's up with his tail. You could take him to a reptile vet, or just get him well fed with gut-loaded, calcium-dusted insects and keep an eye on him. Looks like something was nibbling on his tail.

My new gecko shed right before I bought him over a week back, and it took an entire week for a piece of skin to come off the top of his head.
